This is how many conspiracy theories work, by exploiting real anger from legitimate grievances (often downstream from complex,
unjust systems) and redirecting it onto scapegoats through simplified “conspiracy” narratives.
Been thinking about how MAHA in its current articulation is a movement that allows them to harness people's real and justified anger at things like the betrayals of healthcare and insurance and turn it on scientists as scapegoats, by using conspiracy theories

Okay USA, I know you have plenty of other things going on at the moment, but my new book An Academic Affair will be released in your country in only a few weeks (11 November!!), and if you wanted to pre-order it, I would simply love that.

If your MMR was before 1989 and you have insurance, get your titers checked. You might need a new one—I did.
Since we can’t rely on the HHS, CDC, or FDA to say it, I will:

MAKE SURE YOU ARE VACCINATED AGAINST MEASLES. GET YOUR MMR.

Measles cases have reached their HIGHEST point since the disease WAS ELIMINATED from the United States in 2000. We are at the tipping point for the return of ENDEMIC measles.

Were the author not a business school prof high on his own supply of AI hype, he would perhaps be able to comprehend that the answer to the question of why new graduates lack critical thinking skills lies in the normalization of AI, and the pandemic.
The solution is not more AI, Shannon.

If you think that professors exist as repositories of knowledge that students ask for answers, you’re missing the entire point of a college education.

We’re here to teach students how to do research, how to analyze and argue, how to think for themselves — how to find the answers on their own.
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."

Folks from the villages need our support right now. I can't imagine what it's like, I can't imagine losing a harvest, can't imagine being uprooted and having to resettle somewhere away from the community for a whole winter or more. Fragmentation.

Linked are the official ACF fund and others to help:

This is amazing news. 100% the best Monday news ever. Also, I thought of you all while I was reading this mystery series where a non-professional detective goes around basically accusing everyone in town of crimes. Real Betty energy there.

How to be an informed, pro-library, anti-book ban voter in upcoming fall elections (if you have them) and well into the future.

Don't just celebrate banned books. Don't just read banned books. VOTE to support the democratic institutions creating access to them.

It absolutely *is* polite! Cooperative overlap is a supportive and loving way of talking. There are only, like.. one or two cultures where it's _not_ considered polite, and they can go fuck themselves if they think the rest of us have to conform lol www.anildash.com/2021/09/26/c...

This is how I feel about my students' writing. I want personality, not perfection.
In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness.

Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.
