Making tap-to-ride fares (PAYGO = paying with contactless bank cards) more expensive than cash is… not the way to speed buses up
analytikroll.bsky.social
Speaking of PAYGO, Tap-to-Pay is now a premium at $3.00 per ride whether it's on bus or rail.

CTA fare hikes going the wrong way, penalizing multi-ride ticket holders more than single-trip fares:

🚍 Bus fare: $2.50 (+$0.25, +11%)
🚇 ‘L’ fare: $2.75 (+$0.25, +10%)
📅 1-Day Pass: $6.00 (+$1.00, +20%)
📆 7-Day Pass: $25.00 (+$5.00, +20%)
🗓️ Regional Connect: $45.00 (+$15.00, +50% (!!))

Similarly I think the next D president is going to have to work with congress to reform SCOTUS in a way that reduces any one president's influence over the highest court in the country.
check1check2.bsky.social
Immediately. These are apples and oranges issues. Holding the GOP accountable doesn't require the next president to abrogate the power of the purse. Prosecuting hatch act and Posse Comitatus violations doesn't require Schedule F or war crimes at sea. Trust in the executive is going to depend on it.

zack polanski is so good and i genuinely think if the left rallies around this guy and the green party in the UK, they can easily beat back the hysteria of the reform party

The next D president is going to need to have the courage to reduce their own power while in office

Congressional Dems and the Biden admin should have put more effort into passing post-Trump reforms. We need more aggressive reform than what was on offer then, but it could really have helped

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

The list of things Mike Johnson doesn’t know or hasn’t heard or hasn’t seen or hasn’t been paying attention to grows anytime a reporter manages to ask him an inconvenient question.
atrupar.com
REPORTER: We know the president moved forward with mass layoffs. We're also learning there were significant cuts to staff at special education services. Are you comfortable with those cuts?

MIKE JOHNSON: I haven't seen the specifics of that and I don't know

I mean, I just assume anyone who ISN’T worried about this is either very naïve or deeply in denial.

in which a sitting justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court seems to imply he’s worried about whether there’ll be a presidential race in 2028 boltsmag.org/pennsylvania...
Speculating on Republican motivations, Dougherty said at his Chestnut Hill event that he expects the court to continue playing a major role in election law: “The theory is that we have to deal with a congressional election in 2026, and there’s preparation regarding gerrymandering for the next presidential election—should there be one.”

Finally I will say this:

Few movies these days have the courage to zig the zags that made Dick Tracy stand out. Any more kitsch would have landed another Busy Malone. Go darker or chicken out on the cartoonishness and it's just Gangster Squad. Dick Tracy stands apart because of its fearlessness.

- The color palette Beaty used may well have been dictated by the comic's original printing standards, but they were also such a bold creative choice it's a key factor in why the movie holds up today

- The cameos meant nothing to me as a kid, which is the mark of a great cameo, character>actor

I love that people are talking about Dick Tracy on main/

My observations:

-I waited 30 long years after seeing that movie to finally get a watch that works as a walkie talkie

-Seeing Dick Tracy before the Godfather saga made the latter so much richer and meaningful to me [see also The Freshman]

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

Chicago contains an enormous ridge, a remnant from when Lake Michigan extended all the way out to Beverly in the South Side and up to Western Ave on the North. That ridge was where the shallow water got deep back when the Midwest was under a vast lake.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

Enjoyed the New Yorker interview with Tim Curry, a free-wheeling conversation in which there were several sensitive questions about his paralyzing stroke. But oh my goodness, why was there no follow-up at all to this staggering answer? www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
Screenshot of text from the interview:

You’ve always been an incredibly physical performer: your strut during “Sweet Transvestite” in “Rocky Horror,” or the way you run around unfurling the mystery at the end of “Clue.” Do you still feel that in your body? Does that live somewhere in you still?

I think it does, but it’s angry. My mobility is angry to get out. But it’s not happened yet. I do a certain amount of physical therapy. I did a whole bunch of it at Cedars-Sinai, and I got very close, I think, to walking. That was tantalizing. For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw. And I have a visiting physical therapist now, but I can only really do exercises from my bed, which is pretty pathetic. It’s not going to get me walking, I don’t believe.

[I have underlined the sentence "For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw."]

lol how would you be unaware of what a transphobic pice of shit JK Rowling has been for the last 10 years?
"I was not aware of that, no," Knightley said when asked about the boycott.
"I'm very sorry. I
think we're all living in a period of time right now where we're all going to have to figure out how to live together, aren't we? And we've all got very different opinions. I hope that we can all find respect."
