Chicago. Parent. Fat. Bisexual. Bipolar II. Loud. Still masking. Kind of cute if you squint. Nerdy, but in a way that's fairly socially acceptable now. I have a kid, Nikole, who is she/they and a spouse, N, who is he/him. Avatar by @rally.luckyraven.cc

If you post queerphobic bullshit like "Elonia Musk" or two male politicians kissing or whatever then I'm blocking you.

You don't need to make "ewww gaaayyy" jokes about these dipshits. You can simply point to the actual harm they are actively doing. You don't need to make gay jokes period, in fact.

feel like TIME AFTER TIME is ripe for a reassessment/renaissance. nicholas meyer's first movie, about HG wells (malcolm mcdowell) realizing his friend (david warner) is jack the ripper and pursuing him in a time machine into 20th century san francisco

david warner is one of those guys who in a just world would've started getting prestige roles and oscar nominations in his old age. did a lot of fun stuff and a lot of schlock and elevated everything he was in

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

ICE in Chicago detained two people (that we know of) for filming them today, a cyclist and a neighborhood rapid responder. This in addition to tear gassing another neighborhood and brandishing weapons at rapid response—both things that have also already been going on for weeks.

When that Ryan kid from “Ryan’s World” turns 18, the No Jumper interview is going to be absolutely fucking insane.

His YouTube millions predated any Coogan account laws for Kidfluencers by a DECADE. You suppose his parents have left him anything at all?

If someone says "I want a book that specifically has X, Y, and Z" and his books have that I'd suggest them. But I wouldn't recommend his books as an INTRO to science fiction or fantasy.

They were once.

They aren't any more.

_And that's ok._

And newer books don't mean his books no longer exist.

One of my fave authors published reams of stuff before I was even born. The tech is absolutely outdated.

So are the gender roles.

He paved the way for a million other authors; he inspired a LOT of people who wrote great works. I still love his stuff.

I would not present it as an intro.

This is why I get so exasperated when people suggest SF written 50+ years ago as the place for new readers of the genre, especially young readers, to start with. There is SO MUCH that will throw them out of the work, from outdated tech to outdated social structures. They'll leave and not come back.
jhammersley.bsky.social
Yup was just gonna comment on this! My kids always notice how outdated computers or other technology seem when I make them rewatch e.g. original Star Wars trilogy rr something

Three major themes in Roger Zelazny's novels are: daddy issues; duels (fencing and/or judo); everyone smokes all the time.

My kid is still watching "Malcolm in the Middle" and we've had several "I'm not justifying their parenting but it used to be common...". I informed them that the opening credits are what tv used to look like when I was their age, which is probably the most horrifying thing about the show for them.

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"

The thing about the inflatable costumes at protests is that people can wear full on gas masks under the costumes and take gas to the face without being affected. Just hip thrusting their way through billowing clouds of tear gas.

I have had too many literary "classics" from white authors stuffed down my throat as part of the school curriculum despite living in Trinidad until 14, and even more upon settling on Turtle Island, so I now refuse to read books by white folx unless being paid to do so, as I deserve so much better! 🔥

A bunch of rowdy jocks tossed a nerd out of a window as a lark.

Holden's room mate keeps "borrowing" his stuff and Holden is afraid to object too much because he doesn't want to be thrown out of a window and also because he wants to be liked.
