Something I've learned is institutions treat inclusion less as a right and more as a kind of weapon, offering it where it benefits them and then subtly withdrawing it selectively, say, to punish or intimidate. In this dynamic even the acts of inclusion become a form of division and domination.

I have so much smoke for the those of the lucky few who recover spending their new energy punching down at those of us still sick. Unfortunately I have little energy to back up that smoke.

I hope some with slightly more energy will be able to write to the CBC Ombudsperson about these harms.
CBC is platforming unproven pseudoscientific brain retraining programs for #LongCOVID. In reality, some people recover others do not, no matter what they try.

This approach lays the blame on patients who don't get better because they're not trying hard enough.

As @drshepherd2013.bsky.social writes, what’s horrifying about those numbers is that “the hurricane intensity scale increases logarithmically. That means a doubling of wind is not a doubling of damage. It actually results in a 256-fold increase in possible damage.”

My heart is with Jamaica today

this is the scariest hurricane diagram I’ve ever seen

sick thinking about Jamaica
What we're witnessing with #Melissa is ultra rare in the history of known hurricanes in the Atlantic. This level of sustained intensity and feasting on every joule of ocean heat content without any real disruption is incredible.

Not hyperbole: Jamaica is facing a generational catastrophic event.

Melissa basically isn't even a hurricane anymore; it's more like an island-sized tornado. That is a legitimately terrifying concept.

A key marketing/propaganda tactic relies on "the illusory truth effect." It's the tendency of humans to believe false information to be correct after repeated exposure. It's another reason to be extremely discerning in one's inputs.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

So, Signal does what we can to provide a service w integrity in the concentrated ecosystem we're working in. We protect your comms w end-to-end encryption, so that we can use AWS and others as a highway across which to send Signal data in ways that don’t let AWS, or anyone else, gain access. 12/

In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/

What a wonderful story! Re-reading it reminds me of why I love short fiction. Thank you, Greg Bossert, for trusting me with your story.
"The Night Soil Salvagers no longer need to perform the service they have provided."

We're looking back at short fiction published at Reactor–today's let's revisit "The Night Soil Salvagers" by Gregory Norman Bossert, edited by @annvandermeer.bsky.social

The Night Soil Salvagers no longer need to perform the service they have provided for longer than memory can account for. Instead, they pass the nights in playful and profound acts of artistry, music,...

#FoodBankChallenge

Can we get to $5000 to start? With SNAP running out in Nov if the shutdown continues, more folks will be turning to food banks - which are already struggling since the administration cut $500 MILLION in deliveries back in the spring.

As other people have noted, if you have local food banks, now would be an excellent time to donate cash to them, if you have the cash to spare. We will be upping our donations to food banks and hunger-related charities here in Ohio.

I have done my local food bank donations (and switched some to recurring) but I could really use some collective rage/compassion to fuel me into next week, so if you also made a donation please drop a link to where in the replies!
