"We need to build more housing all across NYC. Today NYC builds about 4 houses per 1,000 people, Jersey City is at 7, Tokyo is at about 10. We need to do this by streamlining the processes of private sector construction across the city, by ensuring we're building more around hubs of mass transit…

one of the interesting thing i have seen in the platner discourse is a refusal to confront a thing on its own terms. to his pundit supporters, platner isn’t a novice candidate with perhaps questionable judgment to be evaluated on his ability to win, but a symbol to wield against rivals

Trump wants us to believe he's unstoppable

But social scientists have found that 52% of all attempts to build autocracies are relatively quickly reversed by democratizing "U-Turns" — and, within the last 30 years, this number has risen to 73%

There is a full-on push in NYC right now to use "Mamdani doesn't make Jews 'feel safe'" as a cudgel to get Cuomo into office, and it is utterly disgusting. You know what makes me feel unsafe? People who casually characterize us as a trembling single-issue monolith scared of the big bad Muslim.

I think that Platner's story about being a drunk Marine is probably true to an extent, but it seemed like he also relished the edginess of it, knowing it was taboo. I think the taboo on Nazi symbology needs to be enforced, especially now.

I'm (sadly) a bit skeptical that rising ACA costs will change the hearts of MAGA Republicans--even those who have marketplace plans.

Why? Well, let me tell you about April, one of the moms I interviewed for Holding It Together.

She's a White, Evangelical Christian, conservative Republican. 1/🧵
Who are the ACA/Obamacare marketplace enrollees?
45% Republicans
35% Democrats
20% Independents

There’s a bunch of research demonstrating that shorter hours and work weeks don’t harm productivity even vs. the 40-hour week, so it’s funny that the people who consider themselves the most rational evaluators of fact alive still just want to dominate their workers for purely ideological reasons
The grind culture that birthed many Big Tech companies from Google to Amazon is back.

As the AI race heats up, startups are promoting hardcore cultures like “996,” or working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week.
Why these companies insist on a 72-hour work week
Start-ups are promoting hardcore cultures such as “996,” meaning working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, as they race to compete in AI.

The ADL has yet to comment on this. But they did make the time for a five-tweet thread today about Zohran Mamdani appearing with an imam.
EXCLUSIVE: Embattled Trump nominee Paul Ingrassia told Republicans that the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday should be “tossed into the seventh circle of hell” and that he has “a Nazi streak,” according to a group chat viewed by POLITICO.

In 2029, Trump’s new ballroom at the White House should be turned into a jail for members of his administration awaiting trial.

You couldn't ask for a better endorsement of Ballot Props 2-5 than Sliwa going on an unhinged rant about them. Is Adrienne Adams still sure she wants to hitch her wagon to that sinking ship?
GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa says he opposes City of Yes and ballot props 2-5, which he says will "take away your homes and provide you with lithium ion batteries, which are like mini-Chernobyls"

Fact check: False. They won't do that, but they will make your rent more affordable.

We recognize exurban sprawl as the built environment of alienation—anti-social infrastructure that invites paranoid, rightwing extremism.

AI and social media are becoming the exurbs in our pockets—they fracture us, alienate us, and disconnect us: the distributed infrastructure of fascism.

It isn't the result of "insufficiently hardened attitudes" about city life. Concerns about subway crime are baseless because the data say subways are overwhelmingly safe.

The reason people fear the subway is that, contrary to that data, people like Charles Fain Lehman keep telling them it's unsafe.
Some dismiss concerns about subway crime as baseless, the result of insufficiently hardened attitudes toward life in the “big city," Charles Fain Lehman writes. But if policy makers ignore people’s fears, they'll miss a chance to make transit better:
The Other Reason Americans Don’t Use Mass Transit
People will take buses and trains only if they feel safe while riding them.
