(1) kudos to ben for transparency, v important; (2) i'm old enough to remember in April when MRM told SFWA the merchandising clause was an "error." yet they keep soft toying w/it and seeing if there are takers. i get ben made a personal call, but short fic writers should know, this is not standard.

4. This is the one that makes my head spin. Clause 2e. "The first right to develop or license the development of special projects, including, but not limited to, games, toys, T
shirts, calendars, and other items based upon characters, ideas, or plots from the Work"

What. The fuck.

It's a great kettle. I hope your teas are as good as Year of the Mer looks, I just read about it and promptly put it on my list of books to ask my library to buy.

I love your cat mug! (Also we have the same kettle.)

Spookymonth continues apace! This week, two favorites return: M.L. Krishnan and Gemma Files. Yes, really. Join us Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. PDT! @emelkrishnan.bsky.social @gemmafiles.bsky.social www.storyhour2020.com
Color photo headshot of Gemma Files, a fair-skinned woman with brown hair worn in a shoulder-length bob without bangs. She wears metal-framed glasses, a black blouse, a necklace of glass beads, and a subtle pink lipstick. She appears to be sitting in a well-lit interior with framed black-and-white photo portraits on bright white walls. Looking into the camera with dark eyes, she smiles sweetly, showing enviable dimples. Head-and-shoulders red-tinged color photo of writer M.L Krishnan, a woman with light brown skin and straight, glossy hair pulled back. Her hair may be black or may be purple; the red light makes this a mystery. She wears large plastic-framed glasses, a red silk tank, gold earrings with ornate hearts hanging from sunburst decorated with red hearts, a gold ring in her septum and several gold rings on her fingers, red lipstick, and black cat-eye eyeliner. She rests her chin on one beringed hand, her face in three-quarter view, and regards the camera with a serious expression.

Hello friends. I lost my job this month, and it occurs to me that now is time to take a big swing at something. If you ever wanted to work with me, bring on an expert researcher, editor, creative writer and storyteller, work with an experienced singer/lyricist/guitarist, whatever, hit me up.

Even just in the ~5 years I've been submitting, it's gotten noticeably harder to find open, appropriate markets when I've got something to submit. It's a hard game, and one I frequently wonder if I still want to play (but then I get an idea and have to write it down and then I have a story, so...).

<settles into rocker>

<thumps cane a few times>

Let's talk about what the process of submitting short fiction used to look like, shall we? And about what it looks like now.

86 years is a good run, but I am truly sad to know we won't get to hear any more music from the great Danny Thompson. I have dearly loved so many records ornamented by his eloquent, inventive bass--just listen to his spellbinding introduction on this gorgeous John Martyn track:

Oh that is such a good idea! My own agenda books are so plain. Maybe I will try making fun jackets for them.

This delights me. I wish you such a wonderful 2026 of gay crimes in pretty covers ✨

HOW TO RESTORE A TIMELINE is two years old. My monster mash of memoir and criticism exploring the experience of PTSD is my less popular book, but I love it and I'm proud of it. Thank you to everyone who has supported this one with your blurbs, reviews, and recommendations—you're all diamonds.
The book HOW TO RESTORE A TIMELINE: ON VIOLENCE AND MEMORY laying on white painted wooden slats, next to three spent bullet casings.

Self pub folks: have any of you heard of or used Blurb for printing? I'd not heard of it before and am looking to hear about anyone's experience with it :)
arielmarkenjack.bsky.social
I see it's on Kobo Plus, at least in Canada! I've already added it to my library so I'll see it and remember to read it after I finish my current book 🖤

Oh wow this looks like my jam. Will definitely read very soon. Congratulations on your book birthday!

Also, I was trying to think of what I might be in the mood to read tonight and seeing your name reminded me that TRVE CVLT is still sitting on my 10p shelf, waiting for its moment. Am I about to give myself nightmares?
arielmarkenjack.bsky.social
Gamut reprinted it last year (though I still usually try to send people to Cursed Morsels for it when I can)! And I'm trying to find a publisher for a collection that it's in!
