Hello friends. I lost my job this month, and it occurs to me that now is time to take a big swing at something. If you ever wanted to work with me, bring on an expert researcher, editor, creative writer and storyteller, work with an experienced singer/lyricist/guitarist, whatever, hit me up.

The Apex team has been made aware of Kickstarter United's strike announcement. Here's how we're moving forward on our upcoming campaign, and how we plan to support the strike.

As you probably know, Apex Magazine is launching our Kickstarter to fund 2026 tomorrow, October 1st.

Today it came to our attention that Kickstarter United—a union of designers, support specialists, product managers, engineers, and more who power Kickstarter—is planning to strike on October 2nd if the Kickstarter executives and board members do not meet their demands for better industry standards. After learning this news, the Apex team debated what we should do. We need to run our Kickstarter or we won’t have the funds for next year, but at the same time we support Kickstarter United and want to stand with them in solidarity so they can have better working conditions.
On Kickstarter United’s GoFundMe page, they clearly state that creators should still run their campaigns and backers should go ahead and fund the projects they believe in.
Because of this statement, we have decided to go ahead with the launch of the Apex Magazine 2026 Kickstarter tomorrow. Screenshot of Kickstarter United's GoFundMe:

"WHAT WE ARE ASKING OF YOU

Kickstarter United is not asking anyone to boycott the site. Keep launching projects that help you realize your dreams; keep backing projects that bring you joy! If you are a creator, you can add a message of solidarity to your project descriptions or write a letter to management and let them know how you feel about giving workers a square deal.

For everyone else: please share our posts on social media; talk to your coworkers about what a better workplace looks like for you; and if you can, please donate to our solidarity fund here on GoFundMe." To further our support, Apex will send a free digital copy of Apex Magazine 2021 to anyone who backs our Kickstarter AND sends a donation to the Kickstarter United GoFundMe.

Just send screenshots of your receipts to Rebecca E. Treasure at rebecca.treasure@apexbookcompany.com.

Apex stands with Kickstarter workers. The Kickstarter executive teams should meet their demands and avoid the strike on October 2nd.

I need more folks to know that Brooke Smith of Silence of the Lambs fame (she's instructed to put the lotion in the basket) was a member of the 1980s New York Hardcore scene and a photographer who documented that scene prolifically. She has a book called Sunday Matinee, which is absolutely stunning.

The entertainment team is a fraction of the staff at IGN, and they laid off 2 of us with the insistence that they'd be "covering the vertical less." In fact, in every layoff they've said "we'll just pare back our coverage." Every single time it's been a lie.

Solidarity forever with my friends.

Ziff Davis and IGN routinely decide that work done by our laid off colleagues is not important. But inevitably, that crucial work falls onto those who remain.

Not this time. Not anymore.
FROM NOW UNTIL FEBRUARY 13TH IGN CREATORS GUILD IS GOING TO... DO OUR JOB!

OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, IGN MANAGEMENT HAS GOTTEN AWAY WITH LAYING OFF OUR COWORKERS OVER AND OVER. MEANWHILE, MANY OF OUR COLLEAGUES HAVE LEFT THE COMPANY IN NO SMALL PART DUE TO BUYOUTS, OVERWORK, AND FEELING UNSUPPORTED, EACH TIME, THE COMPANY HAS REFUSED TO BACKFILL MANY ESSENTIAL ROLES, CLAIMING WE'RE ON A HIRING FREEZE, IT'S NOT IN THE BUDGET, OR THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO LESS WORK THIS TIME.

AS A RESULT, IGNCG MEMBERS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO TAKE ON MORE OF THEIR FORMER COLLEAGUES' WORKLOADS. MANY OF US NOW WORK LONGER HOURS THAN WE USED TO. A LOT OF US RARELY TAKE LUNCH BREAKS. SOME OF US DO NOT TAKE ADEQUATE TIME OFF DUE TO THERE BEING NO ONE TO PICK UP THE SLACK. OTHERS OF US ARE STUCK DOING WORK WE WERE NEVER HIRED TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE.
UP TO THIS POINT, WE'VE ALL ACCEPTED THIS AS NORMAL, BECAUSE WE CARE DEEPLY ABOUT IGN AND THE WORK WE DO. BUT WITH SO MANY OF US STRUGGLING MORE AND MORE AS EACH NEW WAVE OF OUR COWORKERS ARE DEPRIVED OF A LIVELIHOOD, THIS CYCLE CAN'T CONTINUE. MANAGEMENT IS UNWILLING TO STOP IT, SO IT FALLS TO US.
WITH THE LAYOFFS OF EIGHT OF OUR COWORKERS, IGNCG HAS NEGOTIATED A SIX-MONTH RECALL LIST. WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT, FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS, IF IGN WANTS TO FILL ANY OF THOSE ELIMINATED ROLES AGAIN, THEY MUST REHIRE OUR LAID-OFF COLLEAGUES. WE WANT THEM TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET THEIR JOBS BACK IF THEY WANT THEM, AND IF NOT, WE WANT THOSE ROLES BACKFILLED TO EASE THE BURDEN ON THE REST OF US.
SO STARTING TODAY, LENCE MEMBERS ARE COMMITTING TO DO OUR JOBS. NO MORE, NO LESS. WELL SHOW UP TO WORK ON TIME AND LEAVE ON TIME. WE'RE TAKING ALL OF OUR LUNCH TIME, EVERY DAY.
IF WE WORK LATE, WE WILL FIRMLY ASK FOR OUR RIGHTFULLY EARNED COMP TIME. AND IF IGN WANTS OUR LAID-OFF COWORKERS' WORK TO GET DONE, THEY'LL HAVE TO REHIRE THEM TO DO IT INSTEAD OF FOISTING IT UPON US.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT IGNCG IN ALL THIS?
SHARE THIS POST, AND TELL IGN MANAGEMENT THAT Y…
