I’ve always appreciated that the people in the Oprah Extended Universe have unusually Muppett-able faces

He Used to Dominate Daytime TV. Now He’s Sucking Up to Trump—and His Media Empire Is Collapsing.
When Dr. Phil signed off his talk show in 2023, he pivoted to MAGA politics. It’s not working so well for him.

We’ve developed an entire shadow language to try to articulate “It is capital-U Unfair that I, personally am not Rich” and I think that’s beautiful.

In the same way a burning apartment building is beautiful, but still.

(They don’t, they also don’t remove disabled people of any age group)

Oh? Where do they remove retired people from the pool of people considered?

I do enjoy that every “Paycheck to Paycheck as defined by a payday lending company” discourse thread ultimately becomes a Long Covid Maximalist thread

…are you genuinely unfamiliar with the concept of retirement?

It’s supposed to do that lol

I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

"We're saving God from Colin Kaepernik" is a pretty good distillation of Republican thought

It is really bad for progressive ideas if a very professional administration whose break from austerity in favor of pro labor policy to keep wages high can't run on the success of its progressive programs because it hasn't fully cured poverty or whatever

"by the standards we have always used to measure good vs bad economies, the Biden economy is historically thriving" is simply an accurate take?

"nobody is struggling" or "nobody is falling through the cracks" - nobody said these things because they are not true and have never been true, ever

Like I know it wasn’t what you were talking about but it is context for why I’m talking about it sorry sorry

To be totally fair I use quote tweets fairly frequently in kind of this way — like a “this reminded me of this barely-related thing”

(I am probably doing the thing rn, sorry Mr or Ms or Mx Pork)
garlicbuffalo.gobirds.biz
like the number of quotes and replies I get where I’m like “but that’s not even what I’m talking about rn” is staggering

The WHO has verified the elimination of both measles & rubella in all Pacific Island countries, alongside rubella elimination in Japan. The achievement follows 2 decades of coordinated immunisation campaigns, regional surveillance, and high routine vaccine coverage. buff.ly/EpFb7HK

What’s better since 2005? Starts with televisions, moves on to cancer treatment.

The delta for the latter is immense. Too few appreciate this.

The improvement and wide spread adoption of HPV vaccines is pretty big. But besides that we really do/did have incredibly cheap consumer goods and transportation thereof over the past 20 years.

Televisions are so so so cheap now (even if you do need a sound bar now too) and “devices” too

what exactly has gotten better for the average person in the past 20 years with all the innovation such as AI, exactly? what's the social use case here

Yes, significantly. Insurance has to cover preventative care with $0 copay, and must cover pre-existing conditions and mental health conditions. They also can’t charge cancer survivors or ppl with existing health conditions more than others in their group.

The reference to AI says a lot here but ignoring that, the answer is obviously “literally everything”

The biggest difference is that I had access to oncotype testing. Which meant I wasn’t sent for chemo. Oncotype testing has led chemo use to go down and survival to go up for our very common cancer (invasive Ductal carcinoma)
