Maura Dooley visited Chris Wood's Grimm show at Scarborough Art Gallery for which I have written a series of Mortuary Rhymes, as opposed to nursery rhymes, in keeping with the Grimms' tone. She posted this catalogue last page, a suggestion why Yorkshire people are natural matches for such a project.

"Politically correct sirens", with their pronouns nee/naw

Trump: "You hear those sirens going off? That's good. A good sound. That means they either got the bad guy or they're gonna stop the bad guy. You didn't hear that sound bc nobody wanted to do anything. Listen to the beauty of that sound. That's the real deal sirens, not politically correct sirens"

Yes, exactly. Just being able to do it is meaningless. Meaning is derived *from* the process. The “why” for a human artist is working through problems (philosophical and literal) and sometimes seeing something transcendent come out of all that effort.
andreamann.bsky.social
This. Also, because so much AI-generated “art” is prompted solely by “Wouldn’t it be cool if…?!” there’s no “why” to it. No meaning. It’s entirely outcome-driven. So you had a thought, boom, there it is… then what? (Which gives me vague hope that, like a kid with a toy, people will tire of it.)

Every one of these "If only it were possible to..." plugs for AI is animated by an incredibly deep resentment of either talent or authorship.

Despite early, and familiar, copyright growing pains, Sora may be the prelude to AI-generated on-demand TV and movies

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.

I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day

Everyone knows at least one person (normally, but not exclusively, a guy) whose gone properly mental due to net rabbit holes.

We see public figures regularly go mad and destroy themselves.

And we have, at a policy level, just decided to put our fingers in our ears and go nahnahnah

Last night I heard of another friend of a friend who has been lost to a rabbit hole of online propaganda. We need to start treating this as a serious public health concern.

Very good news from the east of Germany, where the far-right (AfD) has its strongest base - the AfD got soundly defeated in two mayoral elections, in places where they were trying to use the presence of people seeking asylum as a decisive issue. Many voters rejected that outlook. That's hopeful.

Wieder ein schlechter Tag für die AfD im Osten.
Deklassiert in der OB-Stichwahl in Frankfurt (Oder) und sogar in Eisenhüttenstadt - wo sie sich echte Hoffnung machte - deutlich verloren.

Jesus. Diane Keaton. RIP to a legend who managed to carve out a lifelong career in an industry that frequently robs women like her of dignity and status once they hit 40.

Diane just threw on a turtleneck and said "fuck you, I'm still going."

RIP Diane Keaton
My favourite picture of her where everyone else is giving it their best Blue Steel & she looks like she’s just wandered in off the street looking super cool.
She was allowed to wear her own clothes & her wonderful personality shines out.
What a unique talent & human being.

What an absolute treasure Diane Keaton was. Her wit never tired, nor did her style.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

Compared to Dylan and Springsteen, country-music legend Johnny Cash can seem deeply uncool. It took time for me to appreciate his profound, plainspoken strength, writes Jon Fasman.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I agree with every word Zelda Williams says. And this at the end from OpenAI makes me want to go full Ned Ludd. Creators can’t have a blanket opt-out on copyright infringement of their work and have to fill out a form appealing to OpenAI’s mercy every time? Fuck off into the sun
OpenAI told the Guardian that content owners can flag copyright infringement using a “copyright disputes form” but that individual artists or studios cannot have a blanket opt-out. Varun Shetty, OpenAI’s head of media partnerships, said: “We’ll work with rights holders to block characters from Sora at their request and respond to takedown requests.”
