Gotta say, Argentina has to be feeling pretty smug about now… just took the US soy sales to China for themselves, and then doubled it up taking 20 billion dollars “feel sorry for me” money from American tax payers! Minted out!

Don't get me started on the two artistic directors of a now defunct Latino classical and avant-garde music festival in Chicago who had most of the artists they invited perform their goddamn awful compositions.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

We had Angela Davis speak at my university a couple of years back. One of the many insightful things she said - protest in the way that aligns with your passion. If that’s poetry do poetry or music etc. Because then you will be able to sustain it. If naked bike rides are your passion, 100% do that.

Someone in my mentions is upset because these people haven’t suffered the worst at ICE’s hands and therefore they shouldn’t be praised for being out on the streets?

Yeah, no. To push back on these people we need everyone — especially those with relative privilege — to get up and get involved.

I walked from Uptown through Edgewater up to Devon this afternoon and there was someone with a whistle every few blocks. Cyclists with whistles were patrolling alleys.
thatguywasfly.bsky.social
One thing I want you to take from videos like this is the absolute cacophony of whistles and screams of "GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD" from people in the streets and in buildings. And more and more people are at that point every day.

Rogers Park

Northernmost lakefront n’hood in Chicago

Home of Loyola U (RIP Sister Jean)

One of few n’hoods w no racial majority. One of the most densely populated places in America, & one of the most racially/ethnicly/religiously/linguistically diverse

An amazing community

And under attack

and kidnapping —yes, kidnapping, let's stop sugarcoating this— citizens and non-citizens alike while shooting at or even beating reporters. (Not to mention that all the trailers avoided any mention of the source's political storyline).

Not even JLO's star power could save it.

Not when ICE goons are marching down the streets of downtown Chicago, throwing gas bombs at residents in neighborhoods like Rogers Park 10 minutes north from where I live, or military helicopters doing the rounds on top of my neighborhood for two straight hours this morning, 3/4

As I wrote in my review, this is not the right time for a musical about musicals that has as its backdrop the waning days of Argentina's military dictatorship (not as insulting as THE PENGUIN LESSONS but still). 2/4

The film adaptation of the musical adaptation of the adaptation of Manuel Puig's KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, made less than a million bucks this weekend. 1/4

It’s been said but it bears repeating: in addition to the people being abducted, all Chicagoans are being psychologically terrorized. Seeing feds driving/walking around and videos of violent attacks in places you know and love will fuck you up. Get ready, it’s coming to all of America soon.

I don't trust the existing Democratic power structure to properly punish these monsters if/when they regain control. But I dearly wish they would bring Republican leadership up on charges of acting as accessories to the administration's crimes, on top of prosecuting Trump, Vance, and the cabinet.
stevenbeschloss.bsky.social
Let’s not forget that every single Republican who stands by and enables Donald Trump could stop this recklessness today, tomorrow or any damn day of the week. Their failure—their refusal—to do so makes them complicit in his crimes and the crimes of his corrupt, lawless regime.

Re-watching Shoot the Moon in honor of Diane Keaton. Holy hell, what a great movie. And so intense. Really captures that feeling of being in the pressure cooker of a failing relationship. As divorce dramas go, Marriage Story is Pee-wee's Big Adventure compared to this.
alejandroariera.bsky.social
My duh moment while watching ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER for a second time this afternoon: the song playing over a bloodied Sean Penn walking down the highway at the end is the classic bolero PERFIDIA performed by the masters of the Gente, Trio Los Panchos.
alejandroariera.bsky.social
And a much better film about divorce than KRAMER VS KRAMER.

One of the most underrated adult dramas of the 80s. Love Shoot the Moon so much.

If you’ve never seen #DianeKeaton in SHOOT THE MOON, you’re missing out. An absolutely powerhouse performance that hits an astonishing range of notes. I promise, you’ll think of her every single time you hear “If I Fell.”

SHOOT THE MOON and MRS. SOFFEL are still my favorite performances of hers. Need to revisit them.

@moderation.bsky.app I've unsuccessfully tried sending three appeals on an image you have deemed as sexually suggestive when it isn't. The image, part of a movie review post, from the film THE SMASHING MACHINE & it features actor Dwayne Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr on his way to his next match.
