Fake prophecies, a shiny new sword, & a branded birthmark are guiding Raul's fate. But who chooses the chosen one? And what can you do when your destiny is a lie? A story about deception, family, rebellion, and choosing your own path.

The cover of the novel Forged for Destiny by Andrew Knighton, featuring a sword and a crescent moon in a ring against a background of flames. Next to is are two quotes from reviews:

“Offers an inventive take on the classic chosen-one trope while weaving in themes of loyalty, loss, and the rebellious power of books and knowledge. Perfect for fans of Raymond E. Feist.” – Library Journal

“Knighton turns the usual archetypes of high fantasy on their heads, questioning the very definition of heroism and villainy in a thrilling novel about a young man’s growing understanding of political and moral complexity.” – Dainy Bernstein, Shelf Awareness

Another graphic novel review up from me - The Power Fantasy continues to be just so goddamn /interesting/, because it takes its premises the right amount of seriously and gets properly invested in what they would mean morally and philosophically. I am so here for it.

Out today, the latest Tyrant Philosophers piece - book 3.5 in the series is a novella length offering about the life of Angilly, who we met in Days of Shattered Faith. You don’t need to have read that (or any of them) to read this.

Lives of Bitter Rain by @aptshadow.bsky.social is out today!

A novella in the Tyrant Philosophers series, this book takes a deep dive into the character of Angilly and her past, and further explores the empire's reach, and the costs of living inside it...

The noisy transphobic block got disaffiliated a couple of years back, & party policy boils down to "trans rights good, terfs bad". Zack spoke up on trans rights in his leadership campaign & victory speech (as did the people he stood against), so the colours are firmly nailed to the mast.

The answer to "how does [author] hold up?" is always "for whom?" Bester holds up fine to me, but I'm a 56-year-old white dude who has a vested interest in the genre. My take on his hold-uppedness will be different than, say, a 15-year-old BIPOC girl approaching science fiction for the first time.

How does Alfred Bester hold up?

I recently switched to Deezer, & I've been happy with that. Seems to function pretty much the same way, but the pittance they pay musicians is slightly larger, not funding arms research, etc. They also have a way to migrate your library over from Spotify.

Congratulations! That's awesome.

Today's writing is mostly finishing yesterday's writing - it was quite hard to research & write about companies when our internet was out for half the afternoon.

One of those "am I too reliant on the internet?" moments, & I'm going to try not to think about the answer.

Controversial opinion but drugs like Ozempic should be regulated to be only used for health. People shouldn't be able to take them just to have visible abs.

Visible abs must remain as an outward signifier of a mind in turmoil. A mind that subjects itself to suffering for its ideal of vane beauty.

Daily bunny no.3106 doesn't like the dark
A bunny descends into a dark basement with a flashlight, hoping to fix a fusebox or breaker box. It is a rainy evening, and presumably the power has gone out. A bat hanging from a pipe greets the bunny.

This, by crikey. I was just talking about multi-camera TV the other day, and how, yes, it can be stagy, but it's fast to shoot, produces better performances, and if you lean into sets and trust to the viewer's suspension of disbelief, it's cheaper, and that means more drama and more risk-taking.

The death of multi-camera TV: a thread. I know most of you will know the technical parts of this (and may have read it in the other place) but bear with me. 1/ 🧵

Had a great time at Humber SFF this evening - lovely bunch of people, interesting questions, and I do enjoy talking about books. Now waiting for a succession of late trains home with far fewer copies of my books than I set out with.

I'm heading down to Beverley in a couple of weeks to talk to the Humber SFF group about my books. If you're in the area & like big fantasy stories about dragons, murder, & characters kicking against the system, then please come along.

Unpopular opinion: Billionaires are pyramid schemes foisted on the public by disconnected from reality, growth obsessed stock markets, VCs & 1%ers.

Nobody's business is worth more than the land value of the planet. But they can scam real fortunes out of govs etc if they claim that. That's the goal.
