Degrees that teach critical thinking can never be a ‘rip-off’ | Letters

“They all aim to teach students to read critically, to discuss, to evaluate and, ultimately, to call out bullshit. Which is why those on the right find them so dangerous”

This article is quite clearly true but I doubt our English friends are ready to hear it. The paradox is that the end of the union would be a fresh start for us all and independence for all our countries would be much healthier than the unequal & unholy union.

How Empire and the Union ruined England, by Neil Mackay
A case could be made that the best medicine for what ails England would be an English departure from the Union, argues Writer at Large Neil Mackay

The houses in question, which the Telegraph is having a fannywobble about this time? Worth tens-of-millions of pounds.

It’s absurd this keening about the problems of billionaires - many of whom only have the properties as investments and contribute sweet blue fuck all to the local economy anyway.

Is your life filled with hate? Are you afraid of others in our society, who aren't the same colour, religion or meet the standards, set by others, for gender? FFS stop reading the Daily Mail or listening to the BBC and any of the other fascist medias in the uk.

Universal Basic Income is automatic, unconditional, paperwork-free insurance we can actually use. It's always there—before, during, and after uncontrollable shocks occur. It's a non-withdrawable stable floor for a stable society. Want certainty? UBI delivers it; same amount, same date, every month.

NEW @motherjones.com: Nobody in that GOP group chat praising Hitler or making racist comments was a “kid,” as JD Vance claimed today

I tracked down their ages. (Weirdly, it seems nobody else did.)

Eight of the 11 in the group chat range from 24 to 35. Ages of others are unclear.

But… no “kids”!
No one in the GOP Hitler chat was a "kid"
We checked. Sorry, JD Vance.

Marie McGowan, 89, has died 3 years after a brutal assault during which she was put headfirst into a rubbish bin. Her attacker, Alex Bailey, believed she was "a man dressed as a woman."

This is the world the transphobes are creating "to protect women."

RIP Marie. share.google/PFaI5YTh9tBw...

UBI is a universal floor. A starting amount. Everyone gets it. Everyone pays taxes on all other income. Depending on details, the bottom 50%-90% of households can expect a boost after taxes.

AOC: And they are able to radicalize a generation of young boys in particular, away from healthy masculinity and into an insecure masculinity that requires the domination of others who are poorer, browner, darker, or a different gender than them.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

Reform candidate visibly squirms as he's confronted by a local family in Caerphilly.
👏 "We've lived here all our lives. And I have never felt so unwelcome in my own hometown as I do since your party came into Caerphilly."

"With all the rhetoric that you bring in, I have to say to my sons, please don't go there. Please don't do this."

"I blame you for that."

@zackpolanski.bsky.social is the first politician I've heard say something sensible about drugs in my life. Clearly the war on drugs has failed, it's wreaked lives and made criminals very rich, and we need to manage drugs in a far more positive way.
"Polanski slammed” reports the Daily Express. The person doing that “slamming” is, err, Daily Express journalist Carole Malone.

And the reason? Because I want us to follow a science led public health approach to regulate drug use.
