It’s not so much about the technology, but where you live with it. Technology is not the main experience, making the place you go out better is

He is debt, but we’re dealing with that. I told him to get it negotiated with the appropriate authorities

Dipped into a karaoke party, my new buddy in the table tunes cars. We discussed how Toyota is a good brand.

I’m with people like that. The problems result from inequality up top

”For sustained growth, governments often reach for tried-and-tested ideas, such as loosening regulations to build more roads or expand airports — giving less thought as to whether that growth is inclusive or undermines sustainability goals”

End GDP mania: how the world should really measure prosperity
The obsession with economic output as a measure of human development puts sustainability on the back burner. Researchers can now help to devise better indicators.

I could be in Helsinki and be like yeah oh we so cool and big, but North Karelia pushes it further in a few categories

"The production of petrol, diesel, and jet fuel all continued to fall, with electric vehicles eating into road-fuel demand."

This is one of the most interesting and probably underrated emissions statistics of all time.

Clean-energy growth helped China’s CO2 emissions fall by 1% in first half of 2025, extending a declining trend that started in March 2024.

I'll follow the relevant Canadians here and see if they are serious.

I hear you car people loud and clear. It is hard to let go of it, and society wants you to be motonormative. But us in the remote Northeast like to live in a new way. Try things out.

It's odd to me how SUVs are sold to city people who want to feel outdoorsy. I've done all my stuff in the Finnish Northeast with this small hybrid passenger car, and now I'm totally buying an #eMTB to go further. Borrowed the regular fatbike free from my town for some trips.
A small Toyota hybrid car on a snowy road in a pine forest. Forest skis and adjustable poles in the foreground. The parking lot of the trailhead has been snowed in. A Tunturi fatbike on the rack of a small passenger car.

My talk about moving elsewhere concerns the broader job situation and the legacy of old industrial structures, rather than what has been accomplished lately.

Maybe I could be more useful to people who still haven't scaled this yet

It's going on in my region. Took a walk here the other day. There are large-scale projects like this in every compass direction.

Fall colours in Savonranta at the Vuokalankoski dam removal site. It opened up fish migration between the huge Saimaa lakes and Vuokala Lake in 2021. The water quality is still excellent.

Old mill buildings and a bridge over a restored river. The birch trees are in fall foliage. Fall foliage on the upper part of the Vuokalankoski rapids.

I'm not involved in politics anymore, but that was a big topic some years ago. The regional bigwigs should put three times as much effort into rail lobbying as into preserving the air connection to Helsinki from Joensuu.

Same, a small amount of our rural buses run on biogas but it's mostly electric

Nykykulttuuri markkinaehtoiseksi.”

@lissaharris.bsky.social Just talking about cars and not respecting the entire transport and mobility system change is like being too cishet in modern society
aarnegranlund.bsky.social
There is a reason why many in the climate movement do not want to confront the car company or the airline directly. I did the latter based on science and emissions commitments, and it pretty much ended my career at that level in Finland (mutually)

Oil consumption is about prestige. I don't need it.

The average fuel and emissions intensity of the U.S. car stock is more than twice that of the EU-27.

The United States is not only the largest producer of oil but also the world's largest consumer.

In the U.S. yes, the classification issue is a profit thing for car makers. Those kinds of monster trucks were at least earlier banned from the EU market because they cause accidents, problems with the emissions rules etc.
