Doing red and whitecurrant (pinkcurrant?) jelly. Almost channeled @nigella.bsky.social and tumbled the ruby jewels into the pan. In the end I just tipped them in from the freezer bag.

1. GIN & TONIC JELLY
2. Nigella 👸 -"Raspberries are just as good, but dust these with icing sugar — it sounds poncey, but it makes the pale-jade glimmer of the jelly & the otherwise-too-vibrant red of the fruit come together on the plate. The whitecurrants should be left to glimmer, opal-like"

#RecipeOfTheDay is Gin and Tonic Jelly! Back in the 90s, I made a few jellies of this sort, and I suddenly felt like a revisit might be in order. I’ve said this before, but remind you again that leaf gelatine is a much better setting agent than powdered gelatine www.nigella.com/recipes/gin-...
Gin and Tonic Jelly
This is so far from being the sort of jelly you'd expect at a children's party as can be imagined! The white currant decoration may be unavailable, but what matters is the drink-made-dessert itself! ...

Blackcurrants and redcurrants and whitecurrants were not cultivated or widely eaten in England until the 17th century … and they were named after the little raisins from Corinth even though they are much too tart to be a decent replacement.

Been gifted some fabulously plump freshly picked #whitecurrants
Never sure how to interestingly use them.
Anyone made ice cream with them ? Or maybe a visually interesting version of “ redcurrant” jelly?

Ah, we used to have whitecurrants too but lost the plants during some landscaping. Fruit picking is hard work, but currants are a dream - no thorns or prickles and you just grab these big, beautiful handfuls…I really love the jam too. Second favorite to crabapple.

This morning's fruit picking in the back garden.

- Red Gooseberries
- Redcurrants

We still have a lot of the above left in the garden.

Small amounts of these, we've decided that whitecurrants look like frogspawn 🤣

- Blackcurrants
- Gooseberries
- Whitecurrants

900g if whitecurrants picked today off 1 shrub. There's more to come but aren't ripe yet 👏👏

My redcurrants are actually whitecurrants, so I'll pick those later.

Been out picking. Ice cream, jelly, jam, coulis...

Me: I should probably tidy around the soft fruit and get the net up.

The soft fruit: Crack on, lad. We're pretty much ready.

Berry update! Strawberries and haskaps are starting to be pickable. Currants, jostas, cherries....

weeks a year, had blackcurrants, redcurrants and whitecurrants from Washington state, I think, but I haven't been there for a while. Beaumes de Venise is also hard to find here, as is a red wine we used to drink a lot, Fitou, from the Languedoc in southern France. Never a bad bottle.

"I bought him a punnet of whitecurrants, a fruit with which he was unfamiliar, though feigning ignorance in order to please me would have been perfectly in character."

Some terrific memories of Edmund White here from Adam Mars-Jones, Alan Hollinghurst, Colm Tóibín and more:
Edmund White remembered: ‘He was the patron saint of queer literature’
Colm Tóibín, Alan Hollinghurst, Adam Mars-Jones and more recall the high style and libidinous freedom of a writer who ‘was not a gateway to gay literature but a main destination’

I have strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, redcurrants, whitecurrants, and rhubarb in the garden. And an apple tree! I freeze quite a bit.

Letting my brain decompress with a nice tier list.

I just realized after the fact that I have tried durian fruit, but apparently had purged it from my memory. Needless to say, I didn't like it. Thus, it should be in the "D" tier.

Catching the meme. Most fruit that I've tried, I've liked. I've probably had a few of the last tier at least once, but just can't recall what they tasted like to me.

Sundays are for : planting whitecurrants and pink lupins; tidying the studio ready for the work; looking for my copy of Disembodied; dreaming of the summer garden and draping and fountains and parasolerie and enchanted drowsy afternoons.

Might be out of stock now. 😐 (Quite limited season.) Also, think you have to buy a box (of whatever kind) in order to buy extras from the shop.

Strawberry jam with rose and vanilla added sounds pretty nice. We get tons of whitecurrants every summer which make a lovely deep orange-coloured jelly. 🙂

Yeah, you see blackcurrant Everywhere, In Everything, and redcurrants occasionally, but whitecurrants are King Not Existing In Any Shop
