Plenty of nuts, berries and fungi this week, but very few flowers in my part of Kent. Here’s Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens), which graces our verges from spring well into winter

About 15 minutes after I snapped that yesterday, I found him on my hand! (He’d crawled up the camp chair). Fortunately I’m still alive.

This recipe calls for sore-bought cooked beetroot. Did you prepare your raw beetroots a particular way for this?

Thank you! Will try (with honey from our own back garden bees)

Do you have a good recipe for the tart?

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than the all-home-grown dish. Looks tasty!

Also adorably small at this point. They’re still only trainees.

My son and husband are at rugby practice and the house is like a crypt.

Duh. Sorry. It’s early and I’ve only had one cup of coffee.

Ah, the fatuous paupers are all over that. They’d have stolen your flock by morning.

DEFRA imposes lockdowns during bird flu season so we are pretty confident about avoiding the flu. No other birds can access the outdoor run and we don’t feed garden greens during those times. We see the occasional illness which can be tragic, but on balance the joy of keeping them outweighs it.

Correction-the white one is a Cheshire Blue not Cambridge. Just looked up on farm’s website - she’s an Araucana and White leghorn cross. Partridge one (Skyline) is a Crested Cream Legbar hybrid. Miss Olive (dark one) they don’t specify.

Ah, the breeds have so many synonyms. These were advertised as Cambridge Blue, Miss Olive and Heritage Skyline. Not the best pic, but here they all are on day 1 when they still needed to be kept separate from the big run for their own protection

I guess in the olden days, the turnips used to wander around. Those were simpler times.

Job occupations, from an 1881 census. Every one of these sounds like something a sorely provoked Captain Haddock would should at someone in times of heavy stress.

We expanded our flock with three new hens just as our white/brown layers tapered off for the winter - so now the egg palette is a dreamy blue-green for the foreseeable.

The “orphan” sock. We have a whole drawer of them, waiting to be reunited

When pairing socks (if you do such a thing) - what do you call the other sock? In my house I look for the "brother" of the one in my hand.

Ah. Wow. We found it growing in an ancient woodland on the Kent/East Sussex border
