Arrived in Canberra yesterday & I found myself in a game store. I grabbed one of those headlamp magnifiers that are all the rage for #WarGamers of a certain age.

I also brought my travelling painting kit to spend sometime painting #ASongOfIceAndFire #Miniatures with my son in law.

Wargamers: Paint schemes reflect the lore of the game and should be consistent, repeatable and researched to make a game into a microcosm of the game world.

There's a new article up on the Warhammer Community site showcasing minis from Kill Team: Shadowhunt.
There's a whole host of Murderwing and Celestian Insidiants, including these, my Raptors!
Check them out!

I think you get what I mean. Why are wargamers so much more willing to pay more money for rules alone? Because at the moment the hobby wargame sector is feeling a lot more sustainable than RPGs.

Terry, I agree. Most contemporary wargames are basically just bigger, more expensive, more tedious SPI games. Wargamers don't want better history. They want games that give them status as collectors. They brag about how many counters they clipped, not about what they learned.

Monthly board game day in Daejeon today. It really reinvigorates my enthusiasm for the hobby - much as I enjoy playing online, there's nothing quite like pushing cardboard bits together.

I even managed to introduce some non-wargamers to COIN via @gmtgames.bsky.social People Power.

I guess that 'are wargamers leaving bluesky' stuff is a bit of a moot point now huh

There's a lot of great writing in this article, but there's one thing I'm especially grateful that it touches upon: why it can be so hard for a woman to walk into a tabletop space in the first place, even if all the men seem nice.

Hmm is there an intersection from wargamers to the others that's "wait I need to measure this"

Escuchando la última moda en wargames, que me parece súper interesante y a la vez me da una pereza infinita.

¿Será la puntilla para mi ya casi inexistente carrera wargamers?

And these systems were developed by people who took it as normal that folk would and could devote hours of downtime prep to hobbies - they were wargamers, after all! Lot of "lonely fun" in wargaming. Honestly, this might be the biggest impact wargames have on RPGs.

A very happy "fuck you" to John Stallard of Warlord Games, who is worried about "wokeism" killing wargames and thinks women don't play them, possibly because women don't want to hang around twats like John.

And how did taking on female wargamers go for the non-"woke" side last time, John?
This here is one of the great U-boat hunters of the Second World War.

Grab a comfy seat and a glass of something pleasing. We're going on a journey...

"It's a lazy journo question" combined with the guy previously slagging off "woke" wargamers & printing weirdo stuff like recommending Birth of A Nation as historical inspiration/research in an ACW expansion to Black Powder - the subtext is rancid, beyond what the explicit statements say alone.

Summation of my thoughts on the current discourse in wargaming
January 9, 2026 at 1:50 PM
Like, sorry, but my definition of a "good guy" isn't one who complains about "woke" wargamers being more critically mindful of their hobby. That would be the opposite of a "good guy" in my book. I don't really care about the guy's private life at that point - he's said enough.

Even after all this time it is still a long road, with self-important gatekeepers, who largely fear change in the one area they feel they have domain in. I hate seeing it, change is good, we are built for change and never liked the boys club mentality certain wargamers try to foster.

Akshully this is code for: "me and my mates would be completely weird if we played with 'gurlls'.."

At Warfare it was good to see quite a few women among the wargamers. There were 4 that used to regularly play at Cancon 20 years ago. Queen Xenobia anyone?

I often bemoan that wargamers just dont really give a shit about theory, but then I look at what passes for video game discourse and realise maybe its fine that we're just perpetually trying to reinvent whether overwatch is good actually.

Are historical wargamers trickling back to Twitter? I know there's a fair number who post on both. Just a vague impression I've been getting recently.
January 4, 2026 at 10:17 AM
I think lists are better than feeds. The 'wargaming' feed has everything from computer games to world of tanks and board games. My historical wargamers list only has stuff by historical gamers, even if they don't always post about it...

One of the committee has refurbished this piece of scenery over Christmas, it’s one of the first pieces donated to the club when it started back in 2001! It’s older than some of the Hemel wargamers. #WarhammerfantasyBattle #warhammerpainting #warhammercommunity #warhammer #warhammertheoldworld
