Experiments in accessibility: so far writing material in LaTeX and then converting it to MathML using Pandoc seems to be a less painful workflow than writing material in R Markdown.

(Mind you, so is writing material in LaTeX and then pushing a teaspoon slowly up your nose.)

On macos there's a fairly simple way to right-click convert with pandoc, but it took some setup.

I tried writing scientific manuscripts with Google Doc, Microsoft Word, Quarto... But I always ended up frustrated and annoyed. I wanted something simple to use, for a lazy person like me.
👨‍💻 I (w/ help from Copilot) wrote a template using Markdown and Pandoc (to docx).

i had a project where i ended up shelling out to pandoc, asking for the ast, and then processing the ast myself, largely for similar reasons.

_and_ it finds bugs while refactoring. It's mind-boggling!

Haha yeah it was already difficult to get people’s comments properly here imagine Overleaf. I did try to pandoc the final version to Latex but the references broke. It’s crazy how we still don’t have a good versatile solution here.

That link is freakin' cool!

Alpha ended up using pandoc (I was a little startled when "brew install pandoc" popped up, but whatever) to go HTML to like really rudimentary Markdown, which she then basically read into context and re-typed as clean Markdown, which is now what's up on the blog.

I now declare myself as converted to Typst from LaTEX based forms as mind started thinking about working on a pandoc typst backend .. which someone else probably is doing already.

The freshly baked Docker images for pandoc 3.8.3 are on Docker Hub and in GitHub Container Registry.
Changes: The build-process for those images has been simplified thanks to the new arm64 binaries available for pandoc-crossref. Also, the #typst images now ship with the latest version, Typst 0 […]

And also Best Left Jellied, a Brindlewood Bay mystery I wrote on my phone during a bus journey to demonstrate how quick pandoc pdf generation is that also turned out to just be a good mystery, too

Remembering the old JWZ saying, "Linux is only free if your time is worthless."

What a headache.

TLDR if you want pandoc to work in obsidian on KDE Neon you need an appimage, not the flatpack.

Fascinating write-up on Think Weirder: compellingsciencefiction.com/posts/the-co....

As a fellow git, LaTeX, pandoc user who writes #scifi stories, I whole heartedly approve of this workflow. YAML use is questionable, but my whole "YAML MUST DIE" schtick has lost steam over the years.
