Chrisitanity or atheism, recast in such a way by a sub-community that it's dependent on an unreasonable claim, either YEC or mythicism, with the denial or torturous reinterpretation of a significant body of evidence in order to doggedy defend said claim

Paul says he met Peter, as well as James, Jesus’s brother. That epistle is regarded as an authentic letter by critical scholars. The most parsimonious assessment of the data is that there really was an apocalyptic preacher who served as the kernel for the Jesus movement. Mythicism doesn’t hold up.

Well mythicism is easy to defeat... where I criticize Ehrman is his arguments for pure historicity "did exist" rely on several Christian apologetics.

?? Carrier claims that everyone rejects Mythicism out of a combination of a strange inability to break free of Christian paradigms and academic conservatism toward new ideas, with Mythicists and their supporters being forced into silence due to fear for their careers.

Oh yeah, I agree. People who push Jesus mythicism aren't motivated by an interpretation of the gospels as fiction genre works of literature, they're motivated by just wanting to straight up deny Christianity even the most minimal degree of real-world grounding.

Per the set of relevantly qualified experts who might, OR might-not, concur mythicism is at least plausible.
What are you claiming when you write: "ALL OF THEM"? Your “rhetoric” would give the impression that NONE concur mythicism is at least plausible!

I’ve read Carrier. Some big mistakes. I don’t find mythicism convincing.

In any case, I don't find the question of Jesus' existence especially interesting. The 21st-century resurgence of mythicism is just sort of part of my mental furniture. To judge from the passion behind your responses, it is clearly *very* important to you.

But all that aside -- yes it's old, yes it's racist; scandal noted -- it's also a weird component in Jesus Mythicism (I think).

I don't really care about Jesus as historical character anymore.
One reason I got interested in Early Christianity, was because the debate of Historicity vs Mythicism annoyed me, as people participating in the debate didn't present new evidence, but instead repeated the same old talking points.

I'm looking at Steven Novella's view on Jesus, which borders on the Christ-Myth theory. While he's a great scientist, he's simply out of his depth when it comes to history.

imo a lot of mythicism discourse ends up like this, with the median pro-jesus having existed argument being terrible negatively polarizing some into the belief that Jesus didn't exist

It's crazy, because not long time ago, Richard Carrier was seen as a fringe theorist of Mythicism. Now, people start to wonder who they should believe, the skinny head with tattoos claiming the Gospel of Mark is defending child trafficking, or the scholar that seems to defend child abuse.

Anyway, as an aside I'm not sure who in the actual realm of analysis is a self-proclaimed mythicist. You'll see most of them invariably state that a historical person is 'possible' but mythicism is more that position argued by (Atwill? iirc) that Jesus was a deliberate fabrication.
