Microtonality is uncommon in Western music, which relies on octaves containing 12 semitones each. The distance between any two notes can be measured in a logarithmic value called cents, and Western semitones have 100 cents between them.

The composition is the culmination of Haas’ career-spanning devotion to microtonality: the use of intervals between notes that are smaller than semitones, or half steps.

My masters thesis in Music Theory would be titled "Microtonality in World Football Chants"
1000 people bellowing out a tune is CERTAIN to be all over the place. But many chants have evolved to incorporate subtle key changes and microtones to better accommodate the crowd factor.

Microtonality and artificial language development share some similarities.
The main one is that "the language doesn't circulate."
(Though one might say, so what if it doesn't circulate?)

In which ambient microtonality meets field recordings and everything is very peaceful on the surface but busy underneath.

"I got bored with one, four and five chords ... so microtonality offered me a sort of sourness and complexity that speaks to more mixed emotions."

The first piece on my solo microtonal guitar album was reamped/mixed/mastered by the inimitable Colin Marston! It's structure is based around a slow 11 against 6 polyrhythm, hence the title. #experimentalmusic #microtonality #colinmarston #guitar

i think that nuclear fission is maybe my least favourite song of all time. its incredibly flat, half the song is one fucking note, and everyone acts like theyve made some massive musical breakthrough discovering microtonality as if it isnt just Part Of Music. ive heard it done better too many times

Semi related, are you familiar with Isomorphic keyboards? Main idea is that you can take a chord shape and move it anywhere to get the same chord in a different key, but it also works really nicely for cool things like microtonality [17edo layout shown here on my hexboard]

Something I randomly remember once in a while: I once saw a video about Arabic music theory which said that Western music theory doesn't have the vocabulary to talk about microtonality. Of course that's not true, but what I keep wondering is: where did he think the word "microtonality" came from?

»Strands of Lunar Light« by guitarist and composer Fredrik Rasten is an exploration of spectral microtonality and just intonation for guitars. A speculative moonscape through sound, shaped by sub-audio vibrations and harmonic resonance.

also, after so much of my life was spent just listening to fairly bland music, microtonality is seriously some of the coolest shit. It’s like if they invented new colors.
I maybe barely grasp music theory, but every time I watch a video on it (in this case on 31 eto microtonality) my brain hits this instinctive “yeah, the music nexus just does that”
