Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

it explains why a lot of successful edm/club music is unspeakably dull to listen to at home, a lot of subtlety/detail/complexity has to be scrubbed out for it to work in a club setting

Yeah I mean with a five piece band or whatever that's pretty much a solved problem, but with electronic music where you can have an arbitrary number of layers live mixing gets exponentially more complicated

You could have shows where you choose your own mix through where to stand — toward the front if you want heavy beats, towards the back if you want to be drenched in lush synth harmonies

I guess my one complaint about the autechre show is that their music is so busy that you are just not gonna get the same level of detail and definition in a live setting that you get on a recording

I dunno, I've just seen this happen way too many times, where someone with expert knowledge in one area think that genAI is bad at that thing, but reasonably good at things they're not an expert in. It doesn't take much connecting the dots to see a pattern here!

I dunno, the music generated by genAI is pretty "well-formed" in the sense that it has recognizable chords and melodies and rhythms and stuff. If it doesn't seem well-formed to you, it's because you have higher standards for music. Some people have higher standards for text

To me, gen AI's generated writing and classical music are about as good as each other (pretty bad), and gen AI doesn't "understand" anything in the sense that we do, so how well we understand either is irrelevant

For people who care about writing, gen AI text is less convincing. But as something that resembles human writing at a first glance, it’s passable

I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s nothing inherently special about classical music that makes it harder for gen AI to produce. The difference is probably that you and I care about classical music, so it is less convincing for us

Also, David Cope and others were using computers to spit out classical music in the 80s and even earlier. It is not that hard to generate something that will pass the Turing test for most people
