The birds in question are the tyrant flycatchers and friends, on the first branch of songbirds that originated in Gondwana, then stepped off Antarctica into South America around 25 million years ago. Over 1300 species, this recent genomic work revealed they fall into 10 discrete families. 5/12 pop

Very social, small, passerine/perching bird of the Afrotropics. Considered a pest in grain & rice fields. Generally gregarious, but can be dominating while breeding. Song is a series of contact calls or quiet "purring."

Three birds perched together on a thin branch, direct gaze facing the camera. A compact bird with a short black tail, and stubby black and pale grey (not distinctly bluish) mandibles. It is black to brownish black on the head, chin, throat and center of the chest, with some purple-green iridescence on the face and sides of the breast. It has greyish brown upper parts and white underparts with irregular barring on the flanks and rump. A small green iridescent patch is present on the outer scapular feathers, besides, especially in the western race, the sides of the lower breast. Wing coverts and remiges are bordered in a paler or warmer tone. The sexes are similar. Immature birds are dun brown above with buff head and underpart plumage. They moult into full adult plumage by age six months, when the males also begin to sing and exhibit breeding behaviour.

Die verandering noemen we umlaut.

Op die manier werd mannakīn het Middelnederlandse 'mennekijn'. Het Middelnederlands is de verzamelnaam voor de dialecten van de late middeleeuwen. Uit 'mennekijn' is ons 'menneke' ontstaan.

Uit luiheid gingen mensen smokkelen: ze begonnen het woord *mannakīn uit te spreken met de tong alvast wat hoger, zodat die minder ver omhoog hoefde om bij de i te komen.

Daarom startten ze bij de e, want die zit al wat dichter bij de i. Zo gingen ze dus de a als een e uitspreken.

'Manneke' en 'menneke' hebben dezelfde oorsprong: het Germaanse *mannakīn, dat ongeveer in de vijfde eeuw n.Chr. zo moet zijn gebruikt. Hoe komt het dan dat we van die a in Midden- en Oost-Brabant een e gemaakt hebben?

Die e is ontstaan door umlaut. Daarmee worden niet de Duitse ...

For my 300th post, I give you the Supermarine Type 300 ! R J Mitchell's creation, to be called Spitfire, is shown here as a fine 1:1 scale replica of the prototype at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. Although Mitchell saw the prototype fly, he died before the Spitfire entered service. 🛩️⚔️📍🔍
The Spitfire was the brainchild of R.J. Mitchell. A mannakin of the designer is shown here sitting at his desk in Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. Behind him is a fine 1:1 replica of the prototype Type 300 from Supermarine, which was eventually to be called the Spitfire, in its first configuration. The Type 300 followed on from the failed Type 224, which Mitchell and his his team had designed in response to a flawed official specfication for a 250mph fighter, which encouraged the use of a rare failure from Rolls-Royce - the R/R Goshawk. This evaporatively cooled aero engine needed a large portion of the aircraft's surface to be covered in cooling radiators, making it exceptionally vulnerable to even a single rifle-calibre bullet! The early Spitifire Mk I suffered from major production delays, due to poor organisation of sub-contractors, but it was available in time for the Battle of Britain, to fight alongside its slower, but more rugged stablemate, the Hawker Hurricane. Like its opposite number, the Bf 109, it was in production from the first day of WW2 to the last.
