Not a monster, actually. Or at least not a very scary one. I'm Dutch but stuck in the US. He/him, usually.

I don't even know if I ruined that movie, I'm more likely to want to watch this remake than the original.

I interviewed a family of Russian asylum seekers who’ve been held more than four months at the Dilley detention center in Texas.

As we spoke over Zoom this week, their daughter Kamilla was one day shy of turning 12. I asked her what she wanted for her birthday.

She replied: “To get out of here.”
'Even in Russia, they don't treat children like this': A family's nightmare in ICE detention
A Russian couple and their children sought asylum in the U.S. In a Texas detention center, they say they endured worms in the food and hourslong waits for medicine.

The family that served as the primary source for this story fled Russia because they spoke out against the war, presented an asylum claim at the border exactly like you're supposed to, and for their trouble has been imprisoned for six-times longer than a limit for families set by the courts. So far!
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

During the Edo Period, samurai were considered *extremely* uncool by Japanese urbanites. The idea of Edo coolness was a kind of aloofness, subdued style, and a visible lack of effort in seeking status. Samurai, with their prominent swords, were only one level above country bumpkins for Edo hipsters.

"You're a Woman, I'm a Machine" is apparently a handful of years older now than "Raw Power" was when I bought "Bleach".

(Only mentioning that to remind you that time is not a real thing.)

The one really good REM album of the 90s, IMO. I did enjoy their 80s albums a lot more than the other 90s albums besides Monster.

You're more than just welcome. I have fond memories of (and related to) Monster, so I did appreciate the opportunity to go listen to a couple of the tracks again.
What’s a song that instantly transports you back to a specific memory?

One day in 1994 I started to walk down a shopping street in Liberec, Czechia. I started to play the new R.E.M. album on my walkman. A fraction of a second later the same song also starts playing from radios in a truck and shops.

...as a kid I couldn't stand black licorice at all. It is one of the most popular candies in The Netherlands. The very salty kind. But I started loving it in my twenties.

It's hard to find here, but fortunately a local Danish friend usually brings me some whenever he visits his family in Denmark.

What are those 3 allergies?

I doubt I ever had grits. The rest I do eat and can enjoy.

I'm more than willing to try grits, but might not be a fan because I don't really enjoy things like creamy corn or oatmeal porridge. That might be an autistic thing, I don't like the texture of foods like those.
