True post-punk heads obviously know this, but I only learned via this song that The Batcave was a legendary weekly event held at a SoHo club that is pretty much universally acknowledged as the birthplace of the goth subculture…which is of course the subject of this concept album.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.

On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

What makes this is the choral textures added by members of the Nashville Symphony Chorus. If you’ve ever sung with an elite-adjacent group (🙋‍♂️), you can really appreciate the level of musicianship on display.

Picking one song from THE NEON SKYLINE is like choosing the best chapter from a favorite novellas. The title track is a pleasant, folky introduction to the characters & setting, but the narrative payoff comes later.

Gotta put in a plug for Cybotron. I nominated this as a proud Michigan native, as this is often cited as ground zero for Detroit’s influence on electronic music. This is music for the post-industrial landscape invented by a group of teens who were into Kraftwerk, afrofuturism, and drum machines.

And, I mean, the trio swings big and knocks it out of the park on this one. More than any other song on the album, it delivers on the promise of playing off each other's strengths. There's humor and pathos and feminism and three-part harmonies and an epic scream-along section.

9. "The Ballad of Bull Ramos" from BEAT THE CHAMP (2015)

Among many good options, my fave on this album about the wrestlers Darnielle idolized as a boy is this meaty, bouncy, twangy song. Ramos sounds like the Spanish equivalent of a real mensch.
