Square producer Akitoshi Kawazu mentions that Square had received a development kit for the Super Famicom CD-ROM drive and that tests for a new Final Fantasy had been carried out with it. The workstations were NEWS.

Of course, this isn't meant as a criticism. It’s just a lesser known part of the series’ history that I personally think is really cool. In the words of Akitoshi Kawazu, who designed the game's battle system: “I tried to make it as close to Dungeons & Dragons as possible. That was my goal.”

Final Fantasy II was famously directed by SaGa series mastermind Akitoshi Kawazu, who has tinkered with proficiency based systems more or less ever since. They're definitely *less* tedious in the best SaGa games but they're still not *not* tedious at times. END

所用のためお休みだったのですが、午前中は時間があったのでお散歩へ。平日とはいえ鳥見の方多かったですねぇ。
近所の園児が賑やかに丘を転がり回っておりました。

There's a lot of insight to be gained about RPG design as a whole by looking at the ways SaGa loves to toy with things. No two entries are all that alike, and if this is a more traditional RPG than the rest of the series, that's only because it served as a springboard for Kawazu to really go wild.
47: Makai Toushi Sa・Ga
Man this one's so good. Even when traditional RPG convention had barely been established, Kawazu was tinkering it and doing such wonderful things. A really grand adventure in miniature with some surprisingly bold storytelling for the time. Loved it.
