![Two chimes of the clock in the small hours of the morning. The Lord of Thornweald Grange, bent over his gleaming work table like a great vulture, gently fits fragments of skull together and frowns in the bright lamplight. His tea sits sentry on a nearby desk, half-drunk and gone bitter-cold hours past. His nimble fingers fit two fragments together perfectly; he marries them with florist's wire and reaches for the lemon speared on the rim of his cup to place it on his tongue, sucks it slowly as he sorts through more jagged, ivory splinters to fit together like jigsaw.
The cadaver lies cold and stiff a few feet before him, the skin of the scalp peeled far back to reveal a cavernous pit where the skull cap should be, having been splintered through with a long bolt of steel in a tragic and disastrous fall from a carriage not even days past.
A careful, cottoned knock on his morgue's door disturbs the calm shroud of silence settled comfortably over him for several hours, and his jaw tightens for this intrusion on this delicate work, this sacred sentry for the dead.
Nenna opens the door, as only she does without leave to, her voice breaking his tenuous silence like the fall of a headsman's blade, "[Little Needle,]" she breathes in their semi-private language, the musical tongue of Khet'dur sung softly to preemptively soothe his coming irritation at being so abruptly interrupted, "[Toulouse… he's found another just outside the main gate… charred black and smoking 'neath a lamp, and…]" She swallows, audibly, thickly, likely steeling herself to deliver news as leaden as the Lord's own eyelids at this small hour, "[A guest. At the door. If they go into a long description of a problem, cut in with, “[Name], sorry to interrupt, but I have a call
in five minutes. What can I do to help out?” You might instead say, “[Name], sorry to interrupt, but I
have a call in five minutes. Can you send me an e-mail?”
The third step is to master the art of refusal and avoiding meetings.
