I've been thinking about this a lot since Pitchfork's top-100 rap albums list came out, and I've determined that Nas - Illmatic is still the greatest rap album of all time.

tough to convey now how fast things changed from, say, 1989-1994. Run DMC and The Fresh Prince ---> Illmatic and Biggie Smalls. incredible.
1994 was insane man

Illmatic, Day 9. Pete Rock's magical chop of a mesmerizing Ahmad Jamal tune sets the perfect tone for Nas' inspirational tale of inner city perseverance to brighter days.

2. Nas - "The World Is Yours"

Illmatic, Day 8. Our 3rd and final DJ Premier beat. Such a soulful Reuben Wilson organ loop. It sets a perfect nostalgic tone for Nas to reminisce about coming up in Queensbridge.

3. Nas - "Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park"

Illmatic, Day 7. More DJ Premier genius. A Donald Byrd sample leads a dark backdrop for Nas' tales of the streets of Queens. "I never sleep/cuz sleep is the cousin of death."

4. Nas - "N.Y. State of Mind"

Illmatic, Day 6. Sequentially next is this darkly triumphant track. I didn't know this video was out there, seems to work well. Reaching the first of 3 DJ Premier productions on my list - Primo has always laced him well!

5. Nas - "Represent"

"Illmatic" is a high point of modern music. 30+ years later it's still astonishingly lean and hungry and tense and kinetic.

Illmatic, Day 5. It might feel a little simple next to the major productions here, but this one is always growing on me. Efficient beat with rolling bass from Large Professor, relaxed raps from Nas, having fun.

6. Nas - "One Time 4 Your Mind"

Illmatic, Day 4. A hazy slice of inner city reality. Features the recording debut of AZ - I don't think I'd still remember "Schweppervescence" without his verse - and trumpet from Nas' father, Olu Dara.

7. Nas - "Life's a Bitch"

It’s gotta be Illmatic

But thank OP for saying “first” because no way I ain’t gonna immediately chase it with The Chronic and 36 Chambers

Illmatic, Day 3. At this point it's basically a 8-way tie for first, but we'll give it a shot. 😎 Letters to a jailed friend, with beat and hook by Q-Tip.

8. Nas - "One Love"
