Good Morning! It is Friday October 17. In 1720 Maria Teresa Agnesi was born. She was an Italian composer. Though she was most famous for her compositions, she was also an accomplished harpsichordist and singer, and her surviving compositions were written for keyboard & voice.

Ah! An arresting detail that I'd never noticed before. In HARD BOILED when Tony Leung enters the library, by the circulation desk there's a poster advertising a recital by the great harpsichordist Christopher Hogwood.

Colin Tilney told me (he was the harpsichordist in Stravinksy's recording of Rake's Progress), that at the first rehearsal, Stravinsky stopped the orchestra. Colin thought he was going to comment about something technical. Instead, he just said "God, this is wonderful music!"

11 years ago today, the conductor, harpsichordist, writer, and musicologist Christopher Hogwood died at 73. His unique combination of intellectual curiosity and entrepreneurial ambition made him a major force in the mainstreaming of Historically-Informed Performance practices.

I enjoyed my seat there for a Don Giovanni (in my year of The Four Don Giovanni’s). It was that seat, numbered “0” on the extreme right first row—I was two feet from the recitativo harpsichordist! And, interestingly, a tympanist was seated with his tympani to the harpsichordist’s right. Remarkable!

Harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani sits down with Pianist editor Erica Worth chat all things Bach.
He tells us why the C major Prelude is a masterpiece, why it’s fine to play Bach with rubato, and why we shouldn’t put him on a pedestal. Plus, he shares his rules for amateur pianists.
