👋🏻 to anyone here who is a new follower (via starter pack or otherwise): a mini-introduction.

In my research endeavours, I have studied how music/sound has functioned in everyday contexts during recent (mainly 20th century) Finnish history.

Never forget, car dependency isn’t freedom.

Some might ask “what’s more free than cars?”

Choices.

Choices are more free than car dependency.

It’s not a hard concept.

I’m not pitting cars against any other single mode of transport.

I’m rejecting design that creates dependency on just one mode.

What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

I dare say I was quite good as a switchboard operator (one of my first jobs), and the training was fun. But I doubt the skills will be put to use in the future.
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

'Master' is too far, but I spent a _lot_ of effort on getting to a pretty decent standard (~ A Level) of Icelandic that has turned out to have fairly limited usage

Archival research feels like it’s full of these, but then there’s always one throwback archive with a microfiche machine or a paper catalogue (or, indeed: NARA)

A very wealthy dude from a country that has never had a single female president is yearning for ‘masculine leadership’. And public executions.
‘Masculine leadership’
And they say gender studies is all bunk
A Palantir billionaire just called for public hangings.

“It's time to bring back masculine leadership to protect our most vulnerable,” writes Joe Lonsdale.

This is where Silicon Valley authoritarianism is heading:

AI is certainly a peculiar tool for this (idiotic) endeavor, which is basically a term search from text files.
Probably generates more chaos than actual means for censorship. Which might be a good thing.
“School officials have created a Microsoft Copilot prompt to review course descriptions with an eye toward avoiding ‘advocacy-oriented or prescriptive terms.’”

Terms: “dismantling, decolonizing, interrogating, challenging, centering, combating, liberation, resistance, activism, justice oriented”

The Motown sound" became the blueprint for pop music everywhere.
