By one of those happy accidents which sometimes occurs in gardening, I planted my gentians near a group of the tiny pink autumn Cyclamen purpurascens, which flowers at exactly the same time. #gardening

This means that if you have a chalky soil you had better give up the idea of growing these gentians unless you are prepared to dig out a large deep hole and fill it entirely with leaf-mould. I planted mine in pure leaf-mould and sand without any peat and they seem very happy.

Today’s flower arrangement.
The lilies called "Siberia" are still buds, and I think the double lilies are called "Petronella”. Also, some carnations, a few types of gerberas, and gentians.

Chiltern gentians this week at The Holies, Streatley (W. Berks) for #wildflowerhour. Pictures 2 & 3 are of the same plant 2 days apart, the 1st showing the flowers largely closed in dullish, breezy conditions and the 2nd showing (some) flowers fully open in bright sunshine.

Hunted for Marsh Gentians today. Was happy to find them flowering despite the dry summer. Also there were plentiful Devil's Bit Scabious. I like Scabious. Also a plant I've come across a few times now, it looks a little like a Hardhead/Knapweed but isn't. I think it is Saw-wort. Corrections?

Closed Bottle Gentians (Gentiana clausa) have slits at the top. Only bumblebees are strong enough to break in to get the good stuff.
Please don't pick/dig them. This population in a popular park is down to one last individual, hiding under the alders.
