As you might guess, I'm the family genealogist, historian, "archivist".

I feel like there is an easier way to do that than using ChatGPT... just saying. You could actually hire a real genealogist instead.

Sounds a lot like the debate Ann Landers did a column about an amateur genealogist that digitized colonial and civil war paperwork and documents and then shredded them and was amazed that the rest of the family and other genealogists were furious and appalled.

As a genealogist, I love bursting bubbles 😁

Will someone please pay me roughly $250,000 a year to be a professional genealogist so I can just look at old documents and read old cool story’s and solving family mysteries all day and be the happiest I’ve ever been?

Genealogist here, yes!

A DNA test can tell you if it’s from a male or female and what their ethnic makeup is very quickly. Using Ancestry, a genealogist could try to build a family tree and maybe find a possible suspect (a longer process though).

For the genealogist who does a #OnePlaceStudy:

"There’s a place in my ❤️" 😊
If a genealogist wrote candy hearts, they would be equal parts love language and research strategy. Sweet on the outside. Slightly obsessed on the inside
What would you add to a genealogist’s candy hearts?

I'm a genealogist, so I have quite a bit of experience trying to get records, etc. It varies so much by state and, in particular rural vs urban. It's costly and it can take so much time. I think it's dead in the Senate, but we'll see. Passports and Real ID can be off the table cost wise.

my Mom (family genealogist) found her maiden name spelled a dozen different ways by different lines of her family. And it's not even a particularly unusual name (think like Eastwood, Easwode, Eswud, Iswod, etc, etc)

One set of my great-great-grandparents is still a big mystery though. I can't find records of their births, marriage, or deaths. They are not found in any of the nearby cemeteries. A professional genealogist suggested that they could be buried in a private family cemetery on their old farm.

Remember when an Irish politician tried to honor JD Vance by having a genealogist research Vance's Irish ancestors only to discover he didn't have any, and it turns out Barack O'bama is more Irish than JD Vance
its weird how they all ideologically align with Roman and British empire but also identify with a kind of mythic Scottish and Irish anticolonial struggle in consolidating their whiteness

I work as a professional genealogist and historian in the Netherlands and have only needed to visit an archive in-person two times in the past six years, including for my dissertation. Once to visit an archive that does not scan on demand, and once to consult restricted access WWII records.

AI can help beyond research. “LLM Prompts for the Professional Genealogist” explores using large language models for business tasks like writing, SEO, and data organization. Practical guidance by Natalie Webb in the December 2025 APG Quarterly. #APGQ #Genealogy

Doing it myself. I’m not sure what an attorney would do. A genealogist might be worthwhile.

If I could pay someone to do the legwork I’d consider it but only for the convenience.

Correct! Married women get caught up in this too. Photocopies won’t be accepted. As a genealogist I know many states there’s a long wait for documents. If people don’t know they need a doc or wait until near the election it’s quite possible they won’t get in time to register.

Get in touch with your local Mormon Church. The original Ancestrydotcom. There might be a trained genealogist living around the corner from you who's just itching to take on a new project.

You're making the assertion here that you believe I only have names and charting, and that when I said "professional genealogist" I meant something different than "person who finds actual records."
