“Subject Delta secured!” I announced as I strapped Mrs. Lee onto the treatment table for, hopefully, one last session. She was a small woman, made smaller by stage four pancreatic cancer, she smelled faintly of peppermint and hospital-grade antiseptic — a scent that had become the permanent atmosphere of my life. She looked at me with an unshakeable, terrifying faith that made the flickering fluorescent lights above us seem ominous. “Thank you, Doctor Erica,” she whispered, her hand reaching out to graze mine. Her skin felt like parchment, thin and dry. “My grandchildren… I just want to see the oldest graduate.
