it used to baffle me that our education systems and research into learning, brain development, etc did not talk to one another at all. now I know it's by design. educated masses are not wanted

The idea of federal officials going to states to help them upgrade their tech capacities is a novel way of thinking about federalism. The USDS team brought principles of human centered design. They also made sure the code the systems ran on reflected the policy goals they were trying to achieve.

This is why I've always hated "what's the best dice mechanic?" discourse. Best for what? Design isn't collecting your favorite tables into a PDF— it's the process of building systems that, when put in motion, lead players to specific experiences that arise pseudo-magically from their own actions.
Game mechanics aren't that special.

There is nothing inherently better about rolling 2d6 vs a d12, rolling over or under a stat for a skill check, or using tokens.

The special part is when you, the designer, noticing how a particular mechanic lets you share a part of the human experience

By learning from other countries and adopting international best practices, California High Speed Rail was able to cut its costs by $14 billion and cut 70% of tunnels.

This is a big lesson for transit projects both in NY & around the US: start by learning from other countries.

A billionaire tax would need to focus on a legal design to catch up with unrealized gains.

My expertise is in aerospace systems engineering so I am not the right person to do this, but someone reading this may be.

The goal is to impede malevolent civic power by pathologically dangerous individuals

In most design you have a very small circle of what the product is expected to do. With LLMs you have a very wide circle that you try to limit as best as you can. Understanding this will tell you why it is risky to implement into systems that need precise circles.

I'm an anti-theist.

I would also design and commission a hell for muthafuckas impugning the people who literally died supporting the systems that denied their humanity... while enabling that of the impugners
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

Hey Bluesky, I’m Zulairam.
I help small-business owners design people-first systems that work as well behind the scenes as they feel on the surface.
Unprofessionally Speaking™ is where I think out loud about ethical operations, sustainable growth, and human-scale business.

Tuomas Kuhmonen tutki väitöskirjassaan yhteiskunnan monimutkaisten ruoka-, energia-, liikkumis- ja yhdyskuntajärjestelmien vaihtoehtoisten tulevaisuuksien ennakointia.

Näiden järjestelmien mahdollisten tulevaisuuksien ennakointi on hänen mukaansa kriittisen tärkeää.

Last week, my Foundations of Human-Computer Interaction class covered an older paper about “social translucence” where they explain how the design of online systems shapes the norms & behaviors w/in those systems. But the framework they create can be applied more broadly, eg to our political moment.

I'll admit, this comment flares up my profound insecurity about my difficulties playing video games

but it also flares up the "oh, fuck off" reflex because video games and board games have transparently sharp differences as forms, as do game-playing and game-design as skills
