Hyperscale cloud providers and developers are buying aeroderivative jet turbines, creating multi-year lead times into 2028–2030—Siemens Energy says over 60% of US turbine orders are AI-linked, Crusoe/OpenAI ordered 29 LM2500XPRESS units, about 1 GW.
Jet engine shortages threaten AI data center expansion as wait times stretch into 2030 — the rush to power AI buildout continues
Wait times for mobile gas turbines stretch into the 2030s as hyperscalers race to buy every jet engine they can find.

Aeroderivative turbines run in simple-cycle mode, burning fuel without capturing waste heat, which puts them well below the efficiency of combined-cycle plants. Most run on diesel or gas delivered by truck, and require selective catalytic reduction to meet NOx limits.
Data centers turn to commercial aircraft jet engines bolted onto trailers as AI power crunch bites — cast-off turbines generate up to 48 MW of electricity apiece
With AI buildouts outpacing the grid, data centers are rolling in jet-powered turbines to keep their clusters online.

Larimer County approves PRPA plan for natural gas turbines at Rawhide Power Station
The Platte River Power Authority cleared a major hurdle this week in its plan to install natural gas-fired aeroderivative turbines at the Rawhide Power Station. On April 21, the Larimer County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a state-mandated land use permit, adding six new conditions to the 32 already imposed on the regional power wholesaler. The decision advances PRPA’s efforts to meet aggressive decarbonization targets for its municipal customers, including Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Loveland, while also spotlighting growing concerns about air quality along Colorado’s Front Range.

Natural gas turbines to replace coal-fired generating capacity at Rawhide Power Station
Setting aside arguments that it is moving too fast, the Platte River Power Authority decided earlier this month to proceed with the purchase of aeroderivative natural gas turbines to replace coal-fired generating capacity at the Rawhide Power Station. The decision commits the electricity wholesaler to an investment of more than $350 million in a 200-megawatt fossil fuel-driven capacity. That capacity will be in the form of several units with a generation capacity of 30-50 megawatts each, according to a PRPA…
