I honestly did not notice it or recognize it. It seemed like they sounded the same as everyone else around me at the time.

But when we traveled back to Louisiana to visit, I *really* noticed other people's southern accents.

Is this a known phenomenon or just a unique weirdness for me?

Linguistic experts: My parents were from Louisiana, but moved to Nebraska just before I was born. I grew up there. Nebraska accent is pretty flat and neutral (subjective, I know). When my young friends would say "wow your folks have a thick southern accent" I'd say "no they don't!"

This is an important point I'd never thought of among all the paranoia about submitting your data.

White people whose history is well documented would feel privileged enough to opt out, but for so many Black people there's nothing, comparatively.

I thank my lucky stars every day that my Canadian now-spouse talked me into moving up here with her in 1997 when she was my Mythical Canadian Girlfriend™.

Not that Canada is free of racism and white supremacy, nor do I know how long it will hold out against the worldwide far-right onslaught.
