Urgent priority is for green banks and public developers to pursue public capture value off the massive solar + storage buildout. There’s added spread from impending loss of ITC.
Won’t happen if they solely prioritize “additionality” or non-market segments in their portfolios.
Won’t happen if they solely prioritize “additionality” or non-market segments in their portfolios.
Or the other way I’ll put it is they fail because they default themselves to only having a portfolio of bad assets.
Yup. Increasing returns demand large portfolios in which higher return assets cross-subsidize lower return assets and minimize project-specific risks.
Municipalization convos too often emphasize lower return projects in housing + energy, ceding market share to the private sector from the jump.

It’s a problem that policymakers so often confuse ‘additionality’ for ‘substitution’ In the green transition. Most technological change is a history of additional technology but it’s in the nature of the ecological crisis that we need 100% substitution with green technologies as a matter of urgency…

Arguments about RECs and arguments about offsets both seem to come down to additionality, but the arguments about RECs aren't phrased that way.
Missing a discussion of additionality seems to miss the key issue.

"Carbon credits are failing to help with climate change - here's why" is a recent paper, published in Nature magazine.
It documents "fatal flaws" with offsets:

🚨 Additionality;
🚨 Permanence; and
🚨 Offsets distract from ending fossil fuels.

Other than I guess firing Kaitlan Collins or whoever, would the Ellisons be bringing that much additionality in favor of Trump?
What would Bari Weiss tell the remaining staff to do that Mark Thompson isn't already telling them?

The follow on point is - copy and paste my REF whining which isn’t to everyone’s taste here - we’re well passed the point where this stuff is providing genuine overall additionality due to odds/bureaucracy.

Secondly, the écobonus is based on the carbon intensity of (final) production on location and the annual grid mix instead of, for example, the additionality of clean power. The former benefits the French, while the latter would benefit German and EU industries more (as well as Chinese).

Oh yeah fun story the Carbon market came up with a system (scheme) for "additionality" where if you boost growth rates on say, pine plantations and then it gets harvested, the additional volume is counted as sequestered carbon.
The math is mind-bogglingly suspect and there is a ton of room for fraud

It is an older method, so not sure how much used now. Also, their additionality criteria seems to hinge on addressing this low adoption 5% figure. Not sure where we are at now for EV “penetration” in Canada.

The question about additionality stands, but more importantly, what about the foundational assumptions: 1) All of the carbon in oyster biomass is sequestered from the atmosphere for decades (false - it is respired), and 2) All of the sedimented organic carbon is permanently buried (evidence?).

Carbon removal won’t reach gigatonne scale by cutting corners. Standards like permanence and MRV are what unlock trust, investment, and lasting impact.

Not all carbon removal credits are equal.
To be credible, a project must meet additionality criteria.
This is where DAC + storage stands out — built solely to pull CO₂ from the air and lock it away for good.
What is additionality, and why does it matter? 👇
