And she asked, had the home office looked at the idea of like a student loan repayment system whereby asylum seekers would come here, have a claim granted, be able to work and then have to pay back the money they took from the state. They were granted by the state in the same way that you pay back a student loan. And Shabana Mahmood said that that wasn't part of these plans, but they look at it. And I was looking at the screen, just wanting to shout at the TV screen, you could let them work. Like, you don't have to do this. You take a certain amount from the state and then you pay it back over what? And so the rest of your life in Britain, you're paying this money back.

“Who are you?” Sandy said, stepping forward and flipping back his coat to show me the iron. He was a formidable shadow in the night, but not one to cause me, a Sunsetter, any worry. “That’s the man who claimed the Pitt bounty,” another man answered. “I seen him in the mercantile earlier today. ‘Slayter,’ Joe had called him.” I looked at the man, who’s name I did not know, then turned my eyes to Sandy. “My name is Frank. Frank Slayter,” I nodded at the four men collectively, still looking over my shoulder, then stood to face them, meeting all their eyes in a sweeping glance. “But you boys can call me Frank.” I let the ashes fall from my hand, flipping my own coat back to show off my iron, matching metal dangling ready on each opposing hip. I eyed Sandy’s pistol, and watched his hand descend to rest calmly on the buckle of his belt. The comment made Amy’s stomach turn. With gritted teeth, she repressed the desire to claw the man’s eyes out. Do I look like some fucking dog? Lucius smiled, placing his hand on Amy’s shoulder for a moment before turning to the rest of the guests. “Everyone, please take your seats.” Amy was seething inside. Maybe I should just break this third rule and see how much carnage I can inflict with a pair of steak knives. As everyone began taking their seats, Amy turned her gaze down and, while focussing on her breathing, took her place at the end of the table. Keep calm. Don’t do anything you’ll come to regret—you just got out of the pit and have no nails left to be pulled. She shuddered at the thought of all Lucius might do instead to punish her.

That she had abandoned me. “But then you show up instead. And I get to learn the ‘truth’ thirdhand. Tell me, is that fair, outsider? Is it? Because to me, this all seems like a cruel joke.” Fox stared at him for a long moment, not understanding. “Abandoned? By who…?” And then she realized. “Oh. Shit.” His mouth set into a thin line. “You didn’t know?” “My mother… she didn’t really talk about her life before. I think it hurt her too much.” “A convenient excuse. Jeweled and Clifton, the Eager Conjurer, run through Stone Vigil with their two companions close behind them. A close up on Zuzure Zure, the eager thaurmaturge, and Tiphane Matigniant, the eager lancer, as they run alongside their companions. Tiphane says, "Aye, the cold has done a number on my joints as well. A moment’s rest to stretch and loosen back up could do us all well before the final stretch of fights against the nesting dragons." Ears pinned, she flinches, and those widened, levin eyes stare back at him, a different kind of haunted than what she'd just been describing but no less bridling. G'raha lowers his hands, settles his breath. The clearing of his throat crackles against the tension. "I… would hear more! Ah, if you— if you don't mind, of course, I won't for—" "Nay, nay, I…" Vio sighs. He catches her relief, brief as it was. "You deserve to be known," he answers. And it's odd, because it is his voice that speaks, and his conviction, but it is all the same without him. He means it regardless. "You deserve to be known as you are. And I would— I would know you, if you'll but grant me leave to do so." The silence hung for a few heartbeats too long. She looks away, stray furs on her flicking tail still simulating shock. Again G'raha struggles to swallow. Too forward, he fears. Too sudden, too brazen, too familiar— "I will forever regret, until I breathe my last, my leaving them," Vio answers. "The ire I left my sister with. But I-I… I just couldn't bear remain there anymore… And I look around us now at these remnants of what was that have not been permitted to rest… The urge to flee lingers somewhere deep. I'm fighting it every time I meet gazes with them." "'Tis putting it lightly to proclaim this a most unsettling simulation of paradise," G'raha agreed. "Yet circumstances being what they are, 'tis effortless to consider what would drive one to cling to that which no longer is… Why one may be so unable—nay, unwilling—to accept the finality of death." "I'm not unsympathetic to Alexandria's plight," argues Vio, "but what they've done, what they're doing, is too far by half. 'Tis an affront to the lives of those that sacrificed themselves that the star may continue on. But were I to see any one of my fallen comrades here, now…?" She huffed. "'Twould prove difficult to resist the temptation to talk to them, j-just one last time. To… to apologize for—" Vio's throat bobs, "for my… transgressions, my failings." "Aye… I've many and more that I have to answer to," sighs G'raha, "yet it is that drive, that need to live and prove you are no longer that man, that you are better than he was when he failed them, that makes their death continue to have meaning beyond senseless loss. 'Tis a driving force, what keeps us pushing forwards." Vio snickers and it tastes bitter. "Ever the optimist." He knows well the intent laced within the remark. He knows, too, that refusing to give it weight does not lighten it. All the same he chooses to bear it and believe that it does not crush against his spine. And he does not wonder for a moment whether he was no less shrouded than the digitized shades forming the bubbling brook of people above.

There was one main room with a clay hearth towards the far wall. A ladder led up to a loft bed. There were minimal furnishings otherwise, but it was quaint.
