#YoungScientistNetworking
Hi all! My name is Julian, and I’m sharing my story today for #YoungScientistNetworking.

I am a chemist and educator at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

I spend my time dyeing in my bathtub at home and doing live public demonstrations for non-scientists across NYC.

...the University of Minnesota, which is close to my home and a great program. I've been at the U of Minnesota since 2014. In 2019, my research shifted from a focus on bio-derived chemicals to an entirely new direction on programmable catalysis (www.cpec.umn.edu)

LFG! #YoungScientistNetworking to start the week off.
Hi everyone and happy Indigenous People's Day.
@quantumtessera.bsky.social
invited me to describe my career journey for
#YoungScientistNetworking so I will try to do that with a few fun GIFs (my photos from the pre-smart phone era are either in boxes buried in the basement or at my Mom's house).

This is absolutely the best advice ever given. No Snark.

Jumpscare seeing an academic reposted onto my timeline here, one who I will always hold a grudge against because they tried to sabotage my job when I was only a couple months in.

Rule 1: trust no one.

Nobody in my family was a chemist or engineer, and none had gone to graduate school. I conducted research in Professor Nick Abbott's lab during the semester, and this attracted me to graduate school. My wife was studying to be a veterinarian...

Academia was off the cards for me. The career planning doc showed I was wrong footed. It was too late to make corrections. But luck was on our side. Around this time, the place where I had an offer on the table from Singapore was advertising again. I reapplied for the job. #YoungScientistNetworking

Folks, it's that time again. I am planning the #YoungScientistNetworking for Spring. Do you want to share your journey in science (chemistry preferred) with people on social media? If so, DM me. Want to know what this looks like? Check out the hashtag on Twitter or Bluesky.

As part of #YoungScientistNetworking, I'm sharing my career path starting from undergrad at the Univ. of Wisconsin Madison. I was studying Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, and I didn't know what I wanted to do for a career; I had only selected CHEN bc I enjoyed it (1/6)

4/17 My first exposure to science was to biology (my father was a zoology prof) but I was drawn to chemistry at secondary school in Port of Spain (molecules and reactions seemed so cool to teenaged me and they still do 😊😊😊) and I must confess to gassing flies with NO2 #YoungScientistNetworking

9/17 I arrived in UK early in 1988 with some job interviews lined up and accepted an offer from ICI pharmaceuticals as a computational chemist. For the first time in my research career I wouldn’t be doing experimental work #YoungScientistNetworking

After a couple of years I wound up leading a small team, and I soon discovered that strengths that drove me as a effective teacher, could be applied to helping others in the workplace. I started to get involved in career development activities in addition to my research. #YoungScientistNetworking

#YoungScientistNetworking will be kicking off on 07Oct. The first "speaker" will be a Scientist working at the FDA. I enjoy their posting on baseball and other topics. The second speaker is a Professor of magnetic resonance in the UC system.

Quyana @quantumtessera.bsky.social for giving me space to share about my career path. I left out a LOT of details, but hopefully this gives young scientists an idea about what a career path in microbiology, ecology, ecoticicology can look like for a #NativeInSTEM! 🧪🧫🐟

My dad is a subsistence hunter, commercial fisherman, & drove large construction equipment. My mom was a high school & middle school history teacher. I started working when I was 8, babysitting. By the time I graduated high school I was a radio DJ for public radio. #YoungScientistNetworking 3/n
