#Win9x

It’s not significantly different from Win9x, just more refined and dumber.

It’s surprising how little the Windows and Mac OS UI has changed over the decades.

Zip Disks really did feel like the future.

I miss when hardware took chances but we’ve sort of optimized that right out of the economy

it looks like Win9X from a distance but the design language and some of the visual elements (including the loading pinwheel!) start feeling very eerily familiar. obv not a coincidence cause it was a Steve Jobs venture but it's funny how much of this was advertised as BRAND NEW!!

you might want to look into the eXo Win9x project: www.retro-exo.com/win9x.html (there's a couple videos by LGR that talk about how it all works exactly)

So, browsing through Myrient for PC ISOs to download led me to finding that Mortal Kombat 3's PC port got a Japanese release and is one of 2 versions to get a Japanese release (the other being the PS1 version).

And the PC version Japan got was the Win9x version, a direct port of the PS1 version

MK3 and Trilogy were probably easier to combine since the Redbook Audio pointers are likely identical between DOS and Win9x
February 6, 2026 at 1:59 PM
I brought this up yesterday already on Discord, but in this case two separate companies worked on the ports. Unless MK3 included Sculptured's DOS port with the Win9x-DOS combo, I don't know if it would've worked as well as we think.

At that point, if you're gonna do both a DOS and Win9x version, have them on the same disc. Mortal Kombat 3 and Trilogy did that, I don't see why EWJ couldn't do the same

This is probably the most negative I've ever been when it comes to a thread talking about odd PC ports.

On one hand, I get it, Win9x was still new and not everyone was likely to jump over, but on the other, this kinda screams "redundant"
A tale of Two Ports

Earthworm Jim would receive a port to Windows 95 based on Special Edition and developed by Kinesoft (who also developed the Win9x port of Gex) and released in December of 1995 by Activision.

Then, a few months later, Rainbow Arts would port the game (and EWJ2) to DOS

As this is the first thing you see when you boot up the Win9x verson.

Rozner's logo is outright removed in the Win9x version. They're likely still in the credits of the game, but I have my doubts. Only GameBank is credited seemingly

As for why this version didn't release in the US? I have no clue. Maybe they thought have two entirely different PC versions of Mega Man X (one for DOS and one for Windows) might've been confusing? And even then, back then, you could still run DOS programs within Win9x

It depends on the manufacturer, and generation of the laptop, although I know that some XP era and late Win9x laptops are actually pretty slim, all things considered. Granted, more modern laptops are going to be slimmer overall, but at the same time it's still impressive for the time!

I ended up sorta starting yet another project last night, except that it's essentially an expansion and refinement of what I was already doing, as I'm trying to collate a list of freeware/open source/PD games across DOS, Win 1.x-3.x, and Win9x, though partly for completion, and organising stuff-

It's a 16-bit application, so it's inherently just not going to work past Win9x. You'd have to use an emulator or VM or the like

Monday morning hustle and bustle in the urban jungle.

I see you used the SNES artstyle. Wonder if there's a place for PSone/Saturn/Win9x
January 25, 2026 at 7:28 PM
Not to say that DOSbox & it's many branches or solutions involving PCem/86box/MiSTer are valid. These tools are amazing & have helped me enjoy & stream many DOS or early Win9X games. But I'm sitting on some real hardware taking up space and it needs to start pulling its weight. Plus fun to tinker w/

Ok, so I've d/l the Win3x and Win9x(94-96) sets as well.

Both are pretty sad compared to the DOS games - it's like we were all swayed by the Windows prettiness and entirely forgot about game...hoping 97-98 will be better...
