Valve sucks and any competitor has, in theory, a massive leg up if they just do things welll, give devs a fairer shake, and keep their mouths shut... and they can't do any of those three.

Its time for a story. Its 1914 and Canada is pulled into WW1, and we need rifles asap. The US is neutral and buying from them is expensive and the Brits can't afford to equip Canada, India, Australia and NZ all at once
