Are you saying the steering wheel in a Waymo Zeekr doesn't turn when the robotics are engaged?

AFAIK, the interface/network between the many Waymo computers and the car they are driving is the same as all the other/OEM computers in the car use.

This doesn’t have to be an overnight goal. The best analogy for making incremental change I heard recently was steering a ship, because you never wanna make a hard steer with a big ship. It’s always small, incremental changes, then one day you say, hey I’ve arrived!

Does anyone know why Waymo turns the steering wheel when their robots turn? Is there an FMVSS requirement?

I've suspected it was cheaper/default and perhaps to give riders some feedback/clue, but I don't recall Waymo explaining it.

Waymo robots do not "talk to each other." They are AVs not CAVs.

As I spent time watching ChatGPT bonk its way through various web interfaces, I also found myself thinking of self-driving cars. A browser that pretends to be a person at the input level - moving a cursor, scrolling a human GUI - felt less like a Waymo, in which an unattended steering wheel turns as a result of actions taken by systems closer to the road, than a regular car with a humanoid robot sitting in the driver's seat. Again, it's pretty interesting to watch! But it also makes you wonder: Why are we doing this that way? Aren't there better ways for machines to talk to each other? The answer, Miller suggests, comes down to the "incentives of their makers more than the intrinsic value of the technology." (The Browser Company was recently acquired by software-maker Atlassian.) For OpenAI, building systems that can execute complex commands on behalf of users is the whole ball game - it's the path to wide-ranging automation and/or AGI, depending on which definition of the term the company is going with that day. An AI model that can provide useful information in a chat window, or handle tasks clearly outlined by the user, is a useful product, but the prospect of an Al model that can productively and proactively interact with the world around it in ways comparable to a human - or, more specifically, an employee — is where trillion-dollar valuations come from. To get where it wants to go, though, OpenAl has a number of challenges. Some are widely discussed and frustratingly hard to pin down, revolving around benchmarks, varying definitions of model capability, and predictions about scaling. Others are more banal: To answer questions more usefully, for example, chatbots tend to do better if they have more data about users; likewise, to execute tasks on their behalf, they need to operate in an environment where users are logged in to the various services they use to work and live their lives. They need a breathtaking amount of access and permission, in other words. ChatGPT isolated in a chat window doesn't have that, and it takes a long time to draw out of users, if they're willing to offer it at all. ChatGPT as a default browser - authenticated in dozens of different sites, payment methods at the ready, or perhaps even logged into a work environment - does. (Such agents also create, as many in the AI space have pointed out, a potential security nightmare.)

The steering in the language the author was asked to agree to is so frustrating. I appreciate this essay on the frustrations of AI in academic publishing, which I share…and one more case of inducing consent to AI via threats of withdrawing support and promotion otherwise.
Proof of how much AI has already become and will be further entrenched in academic publishing arrived soon after this episode, when CUP asked me to sign an ‘AI subsidiary aggregation addendum’ to my original contract. My signature would authorize the press to make my work available to GenAI companies in return for a blanket royalty rate. CUP presents this as a way for authors to get some remuneration if their work is used to develop LLMs (large language models) – an improvement compared with the unauthorised scraping of content that has made the headlines earlier this year. But signing promised more benefits: There ‘may also be opportunities for your content to have greater visibility and impact if it is properly cited and attributed by AI tools’. Alongside this positive incentivising, the message subtly introduced pressure, moving from subjunctive to future tense: ‘Additionally, our existing routes to disseminate your research through third parties such as specialist content platforms or indexers and discovery services will increasingly involve AI components, meaning that opting into AI will be crucial for our long term ability to sell and maximise the impact of your book.’ This was serious. By not signing, I would not only give up the extra visibility that AI tools could potentially generate. I actually risked my book losing visibility. I nearly succumbed. So much effort to see my book be marginalised by an algorithm?
