Kidnapping children is a particularly low form of conduct. In a more domestic context, it unfortunately wasn’t surprising to me that amid all of Irish establishment’s public handwringing over Soloheadbeg centenary seven years ago, no mention of RIC then kidnapping Tipperary children in retaliation
Below is our story about the skyrocketing number of kids detained by ICE.

We cover the facility where Liam is now being held-- parents said food had worms and mold, and kids were so distressed they hit themselves in the face and wet themselves.

ICE Threw Thousands of Kids in Detention, Many For Longer Than Court-Prescribed Limit
Former immigration staffers argue ICE is choosing to detain families for prolonged periods to speed deportations and compel them to leave.

Today in 1919, the rebel parliament, the First Dail, met at Dublin's Mansion House. But pure but portentful coincidence, an ambush of police at Soloheadbeg, Tipperary on the same day claimed the lives of 2 RIC men. www.theirishstory.com/2016/01/21/t...

3/ Together, the ambush at Soloheadbeg and the First Dáil embodied two pillars of the Irish Republic, the authority of the people and the duty of resistance.

1/ On this day in 1919, Irish Volunteers at Soloheadbeg fired the opening shots of the Tan War, asserting by action what the Irish people had already declared by right, that Ireland is a sovereign nation.

In 1919 the Soloheadbeg ambush in County Tipperary ignited the Irish War of Independence; a small attack on two Royal Irish Constabulary officers launched a guerrilla campaign that reshaped British‑Irish relations and led to the Irish Free State #MilitaryHistory

A reminder that the IT’s ‘decade of centenaries’ reporter, someone subsidised by the state to produce official material for schools, somehow left out British kidnapping of children in Tipperary in 1919 to use as hostages after Soloheadbeg (he did however find space to label Dan Breen a “psychopath”)

In 1952 Henri Cartier-Bresson was on assignment in Ireland, here at a pub in Tipperary.

His genius was in adding a layer of humanity that survives the distancing of time. "The most difficult thing for me is a portrait You have to try and put your camera between the skin of a person and his shirt"

Today marks the 106th anniversary of the 1st Dail (21st January 1919), with the 34th Dail being sworn in tomorrow. Coincidentally, on the exact same day, two RIC officers were shot by the IRA in Soloheadbeg, and this ambush marked the beginning or the Irish war of Independence.

Soloheadbeg ambush
The Soloheadbeg ambush took place on 21 January 1919, when members of the Irish Volunteers ambushed Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) officers who were escorting a consignment of gelignite explosives at Soloheadbeg, County Tipperary. Two RIC officers were killed and their weapons and the explosives were stolen. The Volunteers acted on their own initiative and had not sought authorisation for their action. As it happened on the same day that the revolutionary Irish parliament first met and declared Ireland's independence, it is often seen as the first engagement of the Irish War of Independence.
