King Harald Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England fought William the Bastard of Normandy, at #Hastings. The battle was lost, and the course of history itself was changed, when King Harald was killed by an arrow striking him in the eye.
The day began as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day -which was first celebrated on October 12th as far back as the 1800s- and is still celebrated by some, and especially popular among people of Italian heritage. #IndigenousPeoplesDay, however, was first officially recognized in 1992.
