Other stuff I found in Columbus today. Side note, this is a photo where the "brilliance" and "highlights" controls in photo editing actually seemed to make noticeable, good differences.
Metal sculpture of seven Canada geese flying in formation over a bed of bright flowers. Same photo with adjustments made to "brilliance" and highlights" really brought out a vivid redness in the flowers and a deeper more nature hue to the metal sculpture and the green patina on it as well.

They’re not online yet, but The Columbus Metropolitan Library has digitized about a decade of The Other Paper, my alt-weekly of choice in the 90s and 00s, so I got to spend an hour this afternoon visiting 1995 via microfilm.

And I have returned bearing gifts!

It will, of course, never happen. We have to grow up as a community, Mayor Greg La-shutka once said. And somehow you suspect that the city fathers' idea of maturity doesn't include a gigantic blue snake coiling its way across the Scioto River in the heart of downtown. It's a shame, too, since The Snake as the Serpent Mound sculpture that's being proposed for the Broad Street Bridge is destined to be known—is just the thing for a city in endless search of a gimmick. It's never been officially acknowledged that previous attempts at civic gimmickry—the 1992 flower show and the 1994 trade expo for freeloading diplomats-were hapless failures. Far from getting Columbus on to the fabled Map, all that tomfoolery produced was a fair amount of snickering, naysaying and a whole lot of unpaid bills. And now we have to deal with Major League Soccer. But The Snake ain't AmeriFlora, it ain't no U.N. Trade Summit and it ain't no damn soccer team. As Irvin Lippman, director of the Columbus Museum of Art and a member of the jury called on to recommend which of the three proposed works should go on the bridge, said, "Whatever goes there, it's an important statement about Columbus.' The Snake has everything going for it: produced by Todd Slaugh-ter, a Columbus artist, politically correct, looks good from a blimp-hell, it will even ease I-70 traffic through down- town as people exit the freeway just to drive under the thing. This is a chance for Columbus to be indelibly stamped in the mind of the nation as The City With The Snake.

also it should have been obvious but I just learned that Senga Nengudi makes exhibition copies of her R.S.V.P. sculptures. would love to know if the Hirshhorn has been exhibiting a copy when they've shown it recently or if they show the "real" thing (which itself is a refabrication from 2014)

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Joseph H. Hirshhorn Purchase Fund, 2016. In 1975, while observing changes in her physical form during pregnancy, Nengudi began her sculpture series R.S.V.P., kinetic formations of nylon pantyhose and sand tethered to the walls, floor, or ceiling, and stretched like skin. Nengudi has described the series as a "conceptual manifestation of the changes a body/form can endure and how much elasticity is left after the pulling and tension cease." On many occasions, Nengudi has invited select performers to dance with the piece, as if answering the series title's call to respond-répondez s'il vout plait (respond if you please). Hassinger has long been a primary partner in the series, and R.S.V.P. X is one of two sculptures that she has previously performed with. Hidden in one of the nylon pouches are dried rose petals, remnants of a flower that Hassinger also uses in her own work." Senga Nengudi's R.S.V.P. X (1976/refabricated 2014, exhibition copy) at the Pizzuti Collection in Columbus, Ohio. Several pays of brown pantyhose are stretched across the corner of a gallery space, creating a vaguely figurative outline that appears to be bending forward at the feet at a steep angle. The fabric is anchored to the walls at two points with nails, stretching the gap of the corner, and via two weighted sections of fabric on the floor which are filled with sand and rose petals. Another tied section of fabric in the center of the work is filled with the same materials, hanging down from the central point where the fabrics meet.
