They did a “quickbuild” tactical urbanism thing at the county (a good impulse) where they asked for entries for different projects. One of mine won—a new bike lane for a few connecting blocks. We agreed to pay all costs, but ultimately everything needed a county permit, which is impossible.

That’s probably true, but it’s also true that the close proximity of the two locations likely contributed to that as well. Actually, I don’t think I’ve seen any stories about what was done to the Elliot/1st street crosswalk or an update on the quickbuild projects. Add that to the to-do list!

yeah, by "quickbuild" in this case I mean the low concrete dividers specifically
& agree! this mirrors my ped experience so far, where the lows tend to be lower than toronto but the highs are much more thoughtfully executed

I maintain my opinion that toronto's quickbuild concrete block bike lanes are the best on the continent but maxed out montreal bikeways definitely beat maxed out toronto bikeways

After heat and rain, buckled sidewalks are all over town. People ride skateboards, scooters, and wheel chairs over them daily. Maybe the ideal is to demo -> re-pour. But an hour, a concrete saw, and a pry bar could make the sidewalk safe. Even the smallest #quickbuild projects can have a big impact.

where housing at the municipal barracks is cheap, you can play pool and xbox at literally any public building, free meals at the Forward Operating Quickbuild McDonalds, and all the grocery stores are finally reasonably priced but only carry MREs, First Strike bars, and RipIt energy drinks

Something I also think is helpful for folks to know about these quickbuild projects is that they mostly get installed on Fridays (due to existing workloads of Public Service crews) so if something weird and halfbaked shows up over the weekend, wait a week or two, they’ll be back to finish soon

The best person to contact is the traffic engineer. He and the Public Service crews are running the new quickbuild projects as they hit the ground. I do know that in this spot, there’s been a scheduling snafu between two different crews and it’s only gotten half done, so clearer markings are coming!

This is what I’m on about.. here in Cali, we have mountain ranges of smallish boulders collectable for purpose. A convoy of dump trucks from the town corporation yard could in a day provide a mile of quickbuild cycletrack that no car or truck would want to mess with. Aesthetics can and will evolve.
