Has Barrett’s Privateers gone viral on the Tok?

He wrote it.

The NEC decision shows very clearly the Labour Together/Blue Labour faction want to destroy the Left. The few principled MPs -not sold out to the US corporations, the privateers, the arms industry and Labour Friends of Israel, need to consider their position. Labour will likely lose to Reform ..1/2

It seems like Bristol had a strong privateering tradition. So maybe Bristol accents were widely heard in privateers and if not the people themselves sometimes turned pirate, popular culture maybe did it? www.cambridge.org/core/books/a...

Something about how privateers treated their prisoners/captives.

Letters to family & social networks showing that privateering & piracy was bound up with wider society and that privateers & pirates weren't just rogue outsiders.

The different areas privateers operated in, I'd known about the Caribbean but until I listened to this talk I had no idea there were privateers/pirates operating around the North Sea youtu.be/i0gfffdF3zM?...

Yes, we have examples of privateers capturing ships that were transporting enslaved people. We also have personal letters from formerly enslaved women, and I’ll look into how I can incorporate those. If you’re interested, we’ve already done a short exhibition: www.prizepapers.de/materiality/...

Did privateers, like other seamen, knit, crochet, carve, do fancy rope work, and do you have examples?
January 25, 2026 at 9:23 AM
It would be cool to see examples of the “letters of marque” that privateering ships had that officially allowed them to act as privateers.

I want to hear a version of the Wellerman sea shanty, but it's about Dr. Kel working in the array. My life would be complete.

If not that, then at the very least Barrett's Privateers

The American revolution was an internal war between the revolutionaries and the loyalists. Lots of financial impact to all sides. But the privateers made money. The losers were the native Americans.

Barrett’s Privateers but the lyrics are from the point of view of US Senators. “God damn them all, I was told this job was just insider trading”

25/x With regards to the US. Recent congressional proposals (e.g., 2025 bills by Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Tim Burchett) aim to authorize privateers to seize assets of Mexican drug cartels, bypassing restrictions on military operations in foreign territory.

16/x The question was raised whether this scheme violated the Declaration of Paris by which the signatories had engaged themselves no to employ privateers.

9/x Privateers frequently disrupted neutral shipping and global trade by attacking merchant vessels indiscriminately, leading to economic losses even in peacetime (due to insurance costs and fear of capture).
January 24, 2026 at 7:32 PM
4/x Piracy was a serious offence, so to avoid state-sanctioned privateers being treated as pirates, a government could issue a letter of marque that protected the privately owned ship.

I'll never forget visiting the harbour at St. Andrew's by the Sea, NB to hear Stan Rogers Barrett's Privateers booming from a boathouse. A little slice of paradise.

In all fairness she was decommissioned in 1816 after a pretty good career chasing down privateers. So just a little before Lefty’s time…

My book The Privateers begins with Milton Friedman marketing his voucher idea after Brown v Board as a way to avert that ruling and others that would come with “government schools.”

The long alliance between Koch-style Friedmanites and DeVos/Heritage religious nationalists brought us to today.
ProPublica asked Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice what percentage of kids she’d like to see in public schools: “I hope to get to zero,” she said.

Some at the Education Department agree — and are dismantling the agency from within.
Vouchers, Patriotism and Prayer: The Trump Administration’s Plan to Remake Public Education
Education Secretary Linda McMahon is bringing about a new era in education — and perhaps the end of public schools as we know them.

The Privateers (Private Health Pirates) really will try and use any excuse to justify the utter Billy Bollocks they talk...They love to conveniently forget the phones are run by private companies

Almost certainly. Most of them were ex-navy, ex-privateers, or ex-merchant sailors, so still drawing from the same general pool of people.
