Dear fellow historians: I recently asked my undergraduate students what sparked their interest in studying history. Two of them mentioned the film Titanic! Now I'm curious (and will let them know): What sparked your interest in studying #history?

A magnificent exhibition: "Nürnberg Global, 1300-1600," showcasing stunning #MedievalSky & #EarlyModern objects—paintings, engravings, goldsmithing & scientific objects, woodcuts, books (of hours), architectural models, sculptures, armor, textiles, coins. It's SO good!

Hoffnung bleibt Handarbeit.

My colleague Jack Bouchard's book Terra Nova is out today! It's about early 16th-century mariners and the seasonal fishery around present-day Newfoundland, and its place within the Atlantic World. I cannot wait to read it

Terra Nova
A bottom-up story of the fishworkers, whalers, First Nations, merchantwomen, oceans, and animals who together made a new colonial world in the early Atlantic...

Dear historians, some of you often think about the Roman Empire, but what about the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation? In an article with Tobias Winnerling, we ask where we can find the #HRE in today’s pop culture. What should we not forget? All tips welcome! #earlymodern #medievalsky #history

Citizen Sailors e.g. is great research and a fantastic read. Nathan is also on episode 41 of Drafting the Past

Zemon Davis, Darnton, Ginzburg. As a student I also loved reading Norbert Elias, e.g. The Civilizing Process/The Court Society, for the way he develops his arguments. More recent inspirations include Lyndal Roper, Joel F. Harrington, and Nathan Perl-Rosenthal! Wonderful post and thread Liesbeth :)

I’m having intro chats with dissertation students this fortnight, and one of them asked which historians I’d recommend for beautiful writing they could absorb to further develop their own writing style.

So, gang, which are your favourite *writers* among historians, any time, any topic, any place. 🗃️

Is there anything more tantalising than the promise of an early 19th-century letter with the postscript "Burn this immediately"?

Oh! And what do you think about the question? What about Swedish pop culture? Are there any films or series, etc.? I guess Gustav Adolph might play a role here ... I should have asked this question while I was in Uppsala last December! :)
