#Powell’s
Powell’s election is a sign of the disillusionment of Labour members - but there is a much much bigger and more worrying sign.

Turn out was just 16%

Ursula Le Guin's 1999 letter to Michael Powell, the owner of Powell's Books in Portland. Powell's workers unionized in 2000 and have faced some union-busting measures since, but were the first contract in ILWU Local 5.

shoutout to Colin Powell's bathroom phone
My Mom’s brother was regularly on camera on American Bandstand bc he could do the splits.

My Dad’s brother worked in the White House in the 90s. He was once in a room with 2 other people and Bill Clinton. He also called my grandmother from Colin Powell’s bathroom phone.

> Lucy Powell’s election as Labour’s new deputy leader will be “widely interpreted as a sign of disillusionment among party members, after she pledged to be their voice to leadership”.

> Crerar also highlighted the low turnout of 16.6%.

SIXTEEN PERCENT AHAHAHAHAHA

Of course while Powell’s speech was a) repellently racist and b) rightly condemned by the contemporary Tory party, he was only calling for voluntary departures.

The current Conservative policy is worse and more unjust, demanding forced removals of legal residents. We’re in a very, very bad place.

It's a device to avoid revealing it directly and/or to make Powell's win seem like a nothingburger I think.

Don't be fooled by Lucy Powell's election as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. It's being reported as a slap in the face from the Left of the party for Keir Starmer, but there is no 'Left of the party.' Powell was a key part of the 2016 attempted coup against Jeremy Corbyn.

Iain Watson #BBCnews describes Powell’s underwhelming margin of victory 54/46 without a hint of irony in a world where on another issue 52/48 was the permanent settled will of the UK population…

Will Lucy Powell’s election as Labour deputy leader lead to a change in direction for the government?

Or will Keir Starmer continue to let the right wing set the agenda?

Do none of these people actually read these newspapers and magazines? This isn’t even slightly out of character, they’ve been behaving like this for years.

I'm not saying that we're at an absolute tipping point of normalising right wing nonsense; but when Spotify is suggesting I should listen to Enoch Powell's Desert Island Discs, you can see why I might think it.

Wow at Lucy Powell’s deputy leader acceptance speech. Does not pull her punches at all. Tells Labour to stop “out reforming Reform” and attacks “command and control” culture in the party leadership. The first phase of the Manchester Labour Party insurrection has been concluded it seems.

It'll be interesting to see what Starmer does to recognise Powell's victory. I wouldn't be wholly surprised if the answer is: absolutely nothing

Since this is getting some traction, wanted to note that Powell's gets the press of being a cute bookstore, and some of that is deserved, but they absolutely could be better to their workers and have done some dirty things in the last 25 years.

He bitched abt Jay Powell’s budget to renovate the fed that hadn’t been updated since the 1940’s but $250M (find the corp donors, write them & boycott) to build a “ballroom” no one asked for, wanted or needed
