Love your complexity of ideas, but PLEASE do better saying how Scotland/Wales/NIreland are different from England. House buying practices in Scotland don't allow gazumping as well the GP ownership is different outside of England. Please share that some of these concepts work elsewhere in the UK.

Getting a national insurance number doesn't mean that you have to identify yourself as being *British*.
There was literally a 30 year civil war about identity politics in NIreland. A major part of the population reject the legitimacy of the UK state while still de facto availing of state services.

Sure - nobody's going to war here.
But back to my earlier point - the only way this works is if the Irish govt introduces a compatible ID card which is linked to the UK system that allows people in NIreland the option not be identified as *British*.

Fwiw I think my own sectarian background has the opposite problem, where a lot of Irish Americans think of NIreland in very aggressive terms that are out of sync with the resentful but much more peaceful state of things.
