A Boreal Chickadee from Birdtober for #ArtAdventCalendar on Winter Solstice. I have only seen one once, at Sax-Zim Bog, so I gave him a little fruticose lichen on his branch and puffed him up!

For November’s #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn the Pecan Weevil (Curculio caryae). In the same genus as more famous oak weevils, this species lays eggs in pecans and other hickory nuts. It is native to the southeast, but is a notable agricultural pest. #bugs #sciart #wildlife #alabama

März 2025 in meinem Garten. Nach lang andauerndem Frost einige warme Tage. Nur wenig Niederschlag, insgesamt ist der Monat trocken. Die partielle Sonnenfinsternis am 29. ist nicht wirklich zu sehen. Das Rotkehlchen folgt mir bei der Gartenarbeit. Es hat gelernt, dass Menschen Würmer und Insekten ausgraben. Als Insektenfresser schätzt es diese Unrerstützung. Bei Feuchtigkeit sind sofort wieder viele Schnecken unterwegs. Frühblüher locken die kleine Gehörnte Mauerbiene an. Jemand nutzt meine Bärlauchpflanzung (Allium ursinum) als Katzenklo. Rotkehlchen (Erithacus rubecula) Gehörnte Mauerbiene (Osmia Cornu ta) Raupen der Hausmutter (Noctua pronuba) Achateule (Phlogophora meticulosa) Tigerschnegel (Limax maximus) Hauskatze (Felis domestica) Kulturbirne (Pyrus communis) Geflecktes Lungenkraut (Pulmonaria officinalis) Krokus (Crocus) Blaustern (Scilla) Blaukissen (Aubrieta) Traubenhyazinthe (Muscari) Wohlriechendes Veilchen (Viola odorata) Raues Veilchen (Viola hirta) March 2025 in my garden. After a long period of frost, a few warm days. Only a little precipitation, making the month dry overall. The partial solar eclipse on the 29th isn't really visible. The robin follows me while I garden. It has learned that humans dig up worms and insects. As an insectivore, it appreciates this support. When it gets wet, lots of snails are immediately on the move again. Early bloomers attract the small horned mason bee. Someone is using my wild garlic planting (Allium ursinum) as a litter box. Second #NearbyNature2025 post for the year, the Brown-headed Nuthatch. This little bird is a frequent visitor at manmade feeders, but can also be seen climbing up and down trees in search of insects. They have quite high-pitched calls, and are nearly as small as chickadees. #nature #wildlife #sciart

My February #NearbyNature2025 is my local celebrity, the snowy owl! MN is going through an owl irruption, and while MSP Airport often gets snowies, we have a lot this year.

The white-on-white was a tricky but rewarding challenge!

For June’s #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn a Red-Shouldered Hawk. These are commonly seen in my area, as there are abundant forests and wetlands. Although a species of Buteo, they’ve converged on the form of large Accipiters as reptile/bird-hunters in dense forests. #wildlife #alabama #raptor

While the weather was amazing yesterday, we went to a wildlife sanctuary that's just north of Boston. The birds were very active, flitting about from tree to tree and calling to each other.

(Puma concolor) Perched on some rocks as you would expect to find in the desert on inselburgs or fluvial fans that carry big rocks down mountainsides, particularly in ecotones where deserts meet mountains. The rocks themselves have some lichen growing on them, a small california buckwheat, and a little beavertail cactus poking out too.
