If we saw “risk” as rooted in social/environmental conditions rather than the criminal tendencies of an individual, would we still support incarceration as the answer? /fin

Students were holding a mock trial of the GWU's president, the provost, board of directors and others
Encamped for weeks in the yard next to my
law-school office, the students chanted,
"Off with their heads”
“Off to the motherf–king gallows with you"

To all my Phila-area lawyer/law student/lawprof friends: the annual Phila high school mock trial competition has started, and they need volunteers to preside over and score the rounds. No experience is necessary! (Same program I did when I was in HS.)

Two thoughts here. First, law school is supposed to be a learning environment, & students can & should be taught how to avoid using these tools in bad ways. LOTS of lawprof and especially legal writing & research discussions happening on this right now, see @elliemargolis.bsky.social 's feed.

LOL at any lawyer (including a lawprof) moaning about the "cartelization of knowledge and expertise." Law is complicated! Can I say more of substance about crim pro than a randomly chosen non-lawyer? Probably. Can I go into the weeds of just as well as someone doing it for years? Hell no. C'mon.

Live updates: DHS says it has body-cam footage related to Pretti shooting in Minneapolis
The lawsuits aim to prevent federal officials from destroying evidence related to Alex Pretti’s killing and to end the surge of immigration officers in Minnesota.

[Two shootings] involved errors or misunderstandings
That does not necessarily mean they were legally unjustified
It is possible they reasonably perceived threats
when they fired
even if that perception seems mistaken in retrospect

Trump backpedals from portraying Alex Pretti as a 'domestic terrorist' and 'would-be assassin'
Although the president initially reinforced that plainly inaccurate narrative, his subsequent comments cast doubt on the initial justification for shooting the Minneapolis protester.

I can’t believe that so many folks are angry about the usage of the term “friend” in a thread where one lawprof gently, but fully, thrashes another lawprof to shreds.

Have they seen how many months Anthony has spent diminishing Ilan’s work? It’s been a marathon.

To see this thread… *sigh*.

Why don’t you have anything against him personally when he’s trying to undermine birthright citizenship, a vile activity that marks him a vile person?

Just because Wurman is a lawprof doesn’t mean he isn’t also using his position to do vile, morally reprehensible things.

Be against him for that.

Key point. The lust to turn every political contest into a matter of constitutional procedure, rather than a matter of conflicting substantive agendas and factions, makes a monkey of many a lawprof; indeed, the transmutation of base elements into pure process is taken by many for alchemical magic
7/ Second, I think Will is mistaken to describe this as a *Congress* problem rather than a *Republican* problem. The last time the Democrats had majorities (and therefore agenda-setting power) in both chambers was the 117th Congress. And that was a tremendously productive Congress!

I’m a lawyer, lawprof, & mom of 3: a 1L, a 0L, & a freshman bio major. I have thoughts.

1. Timing is everything & a real possibility is that current high school & college students will have fabulous career opportunities in the future Great Rebuilding
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?
